sung by Marianne Faithfull, who was born on this date in 1946.
Her voice changed though the years. Here she is singing that same song in 1987:
Here is her singing Sister Morphine in 1969:
and again in 1989:
Sparrows Will Sing (2014):
Because we are still in the Christmas season, here she is on an album from this year singing I Saw Three Ships:
You can listen to more of her work at Spotify:
Happy Birthday, and may she have many more!
I only knew as Tears Go By as sung by the Rolling Stones. It was one of the songs I listened to when I was sad.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see her staying active through these years. We've lost so many from back then that I treasure the ones who are still here.
DeleteGreat music and it's interesting to hear how her voice has changed over the years too 😁. Wishing her a very Happy Birthday too! Happy Saturday! J 😊 x
ReplyDeleteI was amazed to hear the different voices one right after the other. What a change!
DeleteI have never heard of Marianne Faithful but I did enjoy listening to these. Her voice really changed, didn't it? And thanks for your comment yesterday regarding books. If you ever read the All Souls Trilogy let me know what you think. happy weekend. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteShe was part of the British Invasion in the 60s, but seems to have faded in the 70s due to personal problems. I'm glad she was able to overcome those.
DeleteI will! I'm following comments there to see what other folks suggest ;)
She certainly has a beautiful voice. It resonates beautifully. So sweet of you to spotlight her, since I have never heard of her before.
ReplyDeleteHer voice is striking, isn't it! Both when she was young and now :)
DeleteThose were the days! Have a great day, Valerie
ReplyDeleteAh, youth! :)
DeleteAll the years of smoking definitely changes a voice. I didn't know she had gotten that heavily into drugs, poor thing. Well, hanging around with Mick it's no surprise. I'm glad she survived, even though it doesn't sound like it basically altered her pessimistic nature. Made me feel sad for her.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to consider how common drug abuse was among the rock singers I "knew" back in the day. It's a comfort to see the ones who survived it thriving now. I tend towards pessimism myself, which is odd since I'm a happy soul by nature. I can feel a kinship with some of her songs, though.
DeleteI've heard her songs; Broken English & The Ballard of Lucy Jordan - such a voice.
ReplyDeleteA very distinctive voice, both then and now, I think.
