Hyperion

Hyperion is the first book in Dan Simmons' award-winning 4-book Hyperion Cantos series. I've loved these since they came out starting in 1990, and this is, iirc, my 3rd re-reading.

from the back of the book:
On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called The Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of the Time Tombs, where huge, brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope -and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.
beverage-related quote:
"The Consul turned down the other lamps and poured more coffee for those who wanted it. Sol Weintraub's voice was slow, careful in phrase and precise in wording, and before long the gentle cadence of his story blended with the soft rumble and slow pitchings of the windwagon's progress north"
And with that quote I join the friendly, welcoming group at the weekly T Stands for Tuesday blogger gathering hosted by Elizabeth. Share a post with a drink reference, and join us for a nice visit.

The New York Times has a positive review of Hyperion. Prometheus Unbound opens with this: "I found Hyperion to be the kind of book I hope every book will be when I first crack it open." Tor says, "it’s beautifully written. It’s deeply absorbing, one of those books you don’t want to put down."

Best Fantasy Books concludes, "Hyperion is almost flawlessly executed, whether as a single coherent story, a series of novellas or a set of incredibly compelling character portraits." SF Book Reviews calls it a "masterpiece".

ATCs:

After completely ignoring ATCs for a couple of weeks it feels like I'm starting all over again. *sigh*

I've been looking for stencils sized for the ATCs and can't find any that small. I'm particularly looking for all-over designs and shapes and not figures of animals and such, if that makes sense. I can find 4" x 4" stencils but nothing smaller. Are there stencils out there that are 2.5" x 3.5"?

    1. Those Creative Expressions mini stencils look good, but there's not a retailer close to me. The other retailers either don't seem to do mail order or don't carry the mini stencils. I'm looking up Tim Holtz now. Thx!

  7. I love your ATCs, so perfect for each prompt. I especially liked the Memphis one, as we lived there for a while and our oldest was born there. I am sorry, I don't know much about stencils. I have some small ones, however they are 4 1/2 inch square by Heidi Swapp. They came in a pkg. of 6 with heavy cardstock the same size. Stenicil Minis. I got them at Tuesday Mornings. Happy T Day.

  10. I am intrigued by Hyperion. It sounds like a book I would enjoy. And it's great that you found a drink reference in it, too.

I love the Memphis BBQ. It may be my favorite this week

You can use larger stencils, as long as they are an overall pattern. Do you have a Tuesday Morning? They often have stencils and they start at $2.99. I bought several the last time I was there. Just position the part you want to use over the ATC, tape down, and go from there. I suggest investing in a stencil brush when you buy any stencil. See this post

    https://www.cuttingedgestencils.com/blog/right-tools-for-the-right-job.html

that will explain what to use and when. Although their stencils are designed for walls and floors (BIG STENCILS), the concept and application is still the same.

Doing an internet search, I just found this blog that also tells you to tape the stencil in place:

    https://www.liveabout.com/how-to-use-a-stencil-brush-2579184

I hope this gives you some indication of what you can do with stencils. You can make your own, too, but that involves tools I'm sure you don't have, so won't go into that.

Thanks for sharing Hyperion and your ATCs with us for T this Tuesday, dear friend.

    1. I'll check Tuesday Morning for stencils. I've looked there, but the selection is skimpy with very few of any one thing and not well-organized. I guess I just need to make them a regular stop for a while. Thx for the helpful hints. I made a stencil lol I cut circle shapes out of card stock. It worked for that one time, but without real tools and sturdier materials you're right about that not being much of an option for me. Thx!

  11. Great ATC's, I love the ones with the googly eyes.
Not sure you can get these stencils in the US, this is a link to an English seller of small stencils they have some round ones and rectangle 2.5 inches by 3.5inches

  12. That book / series sounds interesting. I might have to get those out of the library, to read them. I enjoy good science fiction writing. Your ATCs look good. I'm not sure why you feel like you're starting all over. You seem to have been very creative making these. Happy T-Day!

  13. I haven't read that book. Hmm, it sounds like an interesting read. I don't know which ATC is my favorite this week as you have some fantastic ones. Google eyes and graffiti were definitely worth a second look. You could try tracing a playing card for your ATC's, but I don't know of any stencils that size. Hope it was a great T day since it is just about over. Hugs-Erika

    1. It made sense to me that there would be stencils sized for ATCs, but it looks like I'll need to move to England to be among folks who think the same way ;) I'll look at Michael's and Tuesday Morning again now that I know what's what. I don't think England will let me immigrate there lol

  15. That sounds like an interesting book. I'll look into that one.
As for the stencils... Do you have, or know someone that has a cutting machine? Silhouette type machine. Then of course you can make your own stencils in any size you want! A material called Mylar is the best to use. You can also cut with an X-acto knife or scissors. Lots of other materials are suitable for making stencils. Google 'Make your own stencils' and you will get the idea.
    Happy belated T-Day,
    Hugs,

  16. If you've read it three times, "Hyperion" must be really good! Thanks for the recommeendation.

If you're looking for stencils with overall patterns, buy 4 x 4 or 6 x 6 and just use the part you want for your ATCs. I love the handwriting one! Circles is very cool too. Are those googley eyes? Cute.

    Happy T-day! Eileen xx

  17. I don't think the book is for me but I'm delighted to find you are still making ATC's. Stencils would be fun to use. I've made a couple of large once using a plastic sheet and an exacto knife. I'd never attempt a small one. Hope you find some that work.

  19. I hope you don't mind that I added a link to this post, to a new Tab / Page on my blog. This book sounded interesting, and I'm finally making a list of all of the links I saved from your posts about good books / short stories to read. Most had direct links to the stories, but this book requires checking it out of one's local library, so I used your blog post as the reference link. :-)

I haven't finished adding all of the links I saved, but this is what I have so far:

Thanks for doing posts about good books and short stories to read. :-)

    1. This series is wonderful! It's readily available used and well worth re-reading. That's to say this is one series that'd be good to have on hand if you like this kind of thing.

I checked your link, and seeing the link to the M John Harrison post you can tell where I got some of my stories to read ;) Feel free to link. We all get our stuff from others, after all ;)

If you'd like a different link to Hyperion... Wikipedia has information on this book and the entire series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperion_Cantos
