Head

Head is the 1968 Monkees movie. It's long past time to take another look at this, as two of the four Monkees have died.

  1. I don't think I knew they made a movie. I knew about the Beatles' movie "Help!"

    1. The Beatles made 4 movies, with Help being the 2nd. Herman's Hermits made 2 movies. All the cool kids did it ;)

    1. It's very trippy, and I think it's an interesting look into their lives and careers.

  4. Weren't the Monkees a put together group to take advantage of the Beatles fame & popularity?

    1. The Monkees were originally intended to be a fictional band just for the TV show, but it didn't take long for the group to evolve into a real band with its own tv show lol

  5. I saw this way back when. Must not have made much of an impression because I can't remember anything about it--LOL! ;)

    1. It's episodic and very trippy, so there's not a clear linear plot to remember. It's more images from the film that stick with me.

  6. I never saw this, but, believe it or not, I remember the Monkeys, although they were not my kind of music. Too cutsie for me, but I enjoyed this. I guess tastes can change (or grow, or mellow) over time.

    1. The tv series was definitely heavy on the camp and cute scale, but I didn't find their music to be. They suffered more from an unfair characterization as not-real than from their actual music. They were so cavalierly dismissed in the 60s that there was some surprise at their staying power, charting in the 70s and having renewed popularity in the 80s and recording their 11th album in the 90s. Their 2012 tour, a memorial for Jones, was well-reviewed. There was also a well-received album marking their 50th anniversary. I want to check out their Christmas album from last year. The surviving members continue to tour.

And then, of course, there's the Star Trek connection ;)

So I guess I'd agree they were cute both in concept and in person, but I'd disagree they were cutesy.

    2. It's amazing. I went back and watched a few of their hits on youtube and they were more rock than I remember. For some reason, I thought they were "bubble gum," but they seem to be much more rock than I remember. Some conceptions can only change with time, I guess.

    3. It's like movies, I think, where we re-evaluate through the years.

  7. I don't remember the film, but I do remember their songs! The kids at the school where I was teaching back then in England used to follow me around singing 'Valleri'! Valerie

    1. It must've been fun to have that name when the song first came out, and such a hoot to have kids connecting you to the song :)
