Old Yeller

Old Yeller is a 1957 western film starring Dorothy McGuire and Fess Parker, with Tommy Kirk, Kevin Corcoran, and Chuck Connors. A classic feel-good Disney movie, this is definitely not my thing and I'm not sure why I re-watched it. It's a sweet movie, though, if you like that kind of thing or are looking for a movie for kids. I watched it on Disney+.

Rotten Tomatoes has a critics consensus score of 100%.

  1. I watched this at the drive-in when I was six years old. My brother (3), sister (2), and I were in our pajamas and Mom had made us popcorn to share. My sister cried and cried and cried when they shot "Ol Lellow". It's a vivid memory. Also watched South Pacific from the back seat of the car at the drive-in the next summer. Mom bought the sound track and played it over and over on the hi-fi stereo. I loved I'm Gunna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair and Bali Hi and Happy Talk. My brother and sister slept through that one. ;)

    1. Oooo, South Pacific! Now that's one I've seen several times. Bali Ha'i :) I need to watch it again... it's been a while, and I do love it.

  3. I'll say it again-big smile. The dog dies at the end. I bawled my eyes out as a kid, even though I do agree, it's a great family style classic. Happy Easter Nita. I hope you have a lovely day. hugs-Erika

    1. Ah, at the very end, though, the sweetness of the little yellow puppy :) Happy Easter! We're supposed to get some sunshine, and I'm looking forward to it :)

  5. I've heard of this film, but never saw it. Based on previous comments, I guess Old Yeller doesn't me a fairy tale ending.

It hit me on Saturday that you hadn't published any comments and you must either be gone or unable in some way to get to your computer. I'm still furious over the outcome of the TN three. But I'll save my anger (and my despair over the mifepristone debacle) for another day. Today I will instead wish you a very happy Easter.

    1. Oh, but it _does_ have a fairy tale ending, a circle-of-life coming-of-age joyful conclusion. We're just sad about Old Yeller's sad fate, but that's not where it ends.

Republicans everywhere acting out their power and privilege to impose their values and expectations on everybody. Maddening :(

    2. I fear after mifepristone, birth control pills will be the next thing to be banned. Then IUDs will be banned. Soon no one will be able to control their own fate unless they get a tubal ligation or out right hysterectomy. And if this mifepristone is headed to the Supreme Court, will they impose the same fate as they did with Dobbs, or will they pass for once and let the states once again decide. That judge didn't even use appropriate language. Instead of fetus, he chose the words unborn baby. I just hope women can get the drug from other countries. After all, even the Supreme Court isn't allowed to open your mail without permission. SORRY. Off my soap box and wishing you a happy Easter Monday.

    3. They've already targeted birth control, with many claiming "the pill" causes abortion. This SCOTUS was designed for this purpose. I enjoy your soapbox any time you want to use it :)

    4. Another of tRumps indignities, along with turning our forests into mining lands. Thank goodness he didn't get his wish to leave NATO. Last night he said the Xi was brilliant and a great leader and that Kim was brilliant for taking over a country at such a young age and keeping the people happy. Here's the interview from Facebook:

Maybe you will want to watch it and laugh as I did. Not sure who was worse, tRump or Carlson.

    5. The Tucker Carlson interview is a riot, isn't it! And Trump is suing people again. I swear he sues people as his first response. I wish I had hope that trump would be held accountable, but I don't. It's sad what that man is getting away with. Our assumptions have been that people like SCOTUS justices and presidents would at least try to maintain an _appearance_ of trying to do the right thing. These grifters are shocking :(

    6. And all the while he's suing, he's begging for more money to pay his lawyers. He is a master grifter who has grifing down to a science.

    7. His ability to manipulate the courts may be his super power. And he's using monies raised by political action committees to pay his personal legal bills. How anybody _ever_ supported him is beyond me, but he has history here in Memphis so I knew what he was before he had political ambitions. How people can _still_ support him just proves how determinedly ignorant people can be.

  6. We were discussing this and how traumatic it was. I never have recovered.

    1. That scene is hard, but I love how the characters deal with it over time.
