Poison for the Fairies

Horror movies are not dangerous or evil like I've seen some people claim. Let's just get that out there where we can see it. Some horror movies may be about evil, but so also can film noir or children's movies or Bible stories or classic literature or mystery/detective films. Horror is a film genre that dates back to the beginnings of film, as horror stories date back to the beginnings of story-telling. Horror movies range from old silent animated comedy shorts to classic films that are psychological dramas or thrillers.

All of us have film preferences, but it can be hard to know where to start with a film genre you don't like the idea of and know nothing about. As I was with romantic comedies, so many people are with horror. I'd like to give a few examples of places to start with horror.

The Husband doesn't like horror in general, but he enjoys
and old monster movies like these:
and the seasonal comedies like these:
The Daughter doesn't like horror in general but does like these:
The Younger Son doesn't like ghost stories but does like dark fantasy like these:
I might also suggest one of these, being among my personal favorites:
Whether or not you share my particular hobbies, I'll invite you to join me in a seasonal cuppa and a pleasant visit with the T Stands for Tuesday bloggers.

Poison for the Fairies is a 1984 Mexican horror film. It has fairies, witches, and children, with a child being the most horrifying.

trailer:

The Spinning Image says, "This is an eerie and poetic children’s horror that really gets under your skin." Rotten Tomatoes has an audience score of 78%, so over 3/4 of critics gave it a positive review.

  1. I enjoy the old Monster movies. I like horror though I don't like a lot of gratuitous gore. Hitchcock's The Birds and Psycho are two of my favorites as he's a master storyteller though I think those would fall under thriller or maybe just Hitchcock. The cream ghostie in your cup made me smile. I had a talking Casper doll when I was a kid. Happy T Day!

    1. We see The Birds and Psycho classified as horror, though certainly not all of Hitchcock is horror. I remember the Casper cartoons when I was little :)

  6. I've heard of some of these, but not all. So glad you clarified horror. I'm sure my conception of horror was vastly different, so I'm glad you clarified things for us.

Your ghostly coffee is perfect for T Day. Thanks for sharing the various horror stories you and your family like, as well as your ghostly coffee with us for T this Tuesday.

  7. I am not into horror of any kind but I really love The Mummy! Such a great series but that has more to do with my love of Egypt.
That ghost in the coffee cup is very cool!
    Happy Tea Day,

  8. Very good points, D. I guess I fall into your hubby's category. I enjoy most of those movies from time to time. I also enjoy The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, as well as Alfred Hitchcock's horror films.

What I don't like are ear piercing sound tracks without respite and too realistic and gratuitous gore.

You started a very interesting discussion here.

Your ghostly drink share is perfect! Wherever did you find that?!

Happy Halloween and Happy T-day! Eileen xx

    1. I agree the gratuitous gore isn't my thing, and some of them have a posturing nudity that seems silly. I've heard some soundtracks that destroy the film imo.

I got the photo from Pixabay. They have good choices that are free with no attribution necessary. It makes it easy to use them :)

  9. Thank you for sharing your movie lists, I am still not tempted to watch this type of film, but I'm sure many folk will and enjoy the film.
Your coffee looked good and the topping was super.
    Happy T day wishes.

  11. Oooh, I like your movie list. I think I saw The Haunting a long time ago. I also think they might've remade it, with Catherine Zeta Jones in it (or else that was a remake of something else). I might've run out of time to watch The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, but that's another great one. I liked the original Carnival of Souls, which also got remade. (I just watched The Uninvited, as you saw on my T-Post.) My favorites are the Disney Legend of Sleepy Hollow cartoon (I think the name is something else) and the Johnny Depp movie. I'm saving those for Halloween itself. :-) And I just remembered I have a link on my blog for videos, including: Night On Bald Mountain - Fantasia (1941) (Theatrical Cut). Happy T-Day!

    1. I'm not a post-Pirates Depp fan, but I remember that Disney Sleepy Hollow and Fantasia films. I love both of those but haven't seen them in ages. I haven't seen the Haunting remake and didn't realize Carnival of Souls had been remade. I'll have to look for it, thx!

  12. That is a very cool season cuppa. It is that season, almost. And thanks for the info on horror. I always think of horror as blood, guts and gore. Maybe I am not thinking broad enough about that genre. I hope it was a wonderful T day. Hugs-Erika

  14. I must say I'm more for a humourous take on horror but do remember watching quite a few Christopher Lee films in my late teens! The Raven was one of my favourites! Belated Happy T Day! Chrisx

  15. Yes, there are a lot of populat horror movies out there. I love Hitchcock films, which to me are 'horror' and as a child I used to have a cartoon called Caspar the ghost. I enjoyed the Frankenstein film as a teenager, but when us girls went for a drink after the movie and a man with his head bandaged came into the bar, we all fled screaming!
And what about the Adams family! That was hilarious and I can still remember the signature melody.
    Happy belated T-Day,
    Lisca

    1. There are great discussions out there about what qualifies as "horror" and I take a broad view ;) That's a great story! I was a big Addams Family tv show fan when I was young, and we liked the movie :)

  16. Your coffee is wonderful and perfect for this time of year. I remember a movie I liked, the older version of The Body Snatchers, and The Blob, again an old, old version. I used to like this genre when I was younger. :)
Sorry to be late. Have a great week-end!

    1. I grew to like horror more in later life. That first Body Snatchers is hard to find for a price I was ever willing to pay, but I did finally see it on TV and thought it was a perfect reflection of the 70s. That original Blob film I found on TV, too, and was surprised to see 28-year old Steve McQueen playing a high school kid. It reminded me of Olivia Newton-John, who was 30 or so I think when she starred in Grease.
