The Summer Patio
Every year I want to change up my patio a bit, and every year I can't figure out what that would look like. This year The Husband painted the chairs, and I added a redbud tree. Other than that, it's much the same.
It's an enjoyable place for a morning cuppa
and I sometimes even eat lunch out there.
I've had to take down the platform feeder, because the squirrels finally discovered it. Right now I'm providing a waste-free seed, fruit, and nut mix in the hopper feeder and shelled peanuts in that screened tube feeder:
There's sugar water for the hummingbirds and purple finches, and there are mealworms:
The lavender has started blooming:
including the lavender I rooted this spring:
The honeysuckle is blooming better than it ever has:
which brings me joy.
The daylilies are from Mother's, and I remember them being in both front and back yards when I was growing up:
All in all I find it a delightful spot. It's manageable, and it gives me a place for my potted plants to spread out in good weather. I do wish I knew what I wanted to change. Coz I have a yen to re-arrange. Or add. Or something...

Such a lovely, peaceful spot. What is the seed brand you are using? Himself bought a brand that the birds don't seem to like too much. The squirrel did try to climb the pole but got stopped by the baffle. (I usually buy Pennington's Songbird and Fruit and Nut Blends) Enjoy the day!
ReplyDeleteWe're using Kaytee Ultra waste-free mix. The birds like this, and it's easy to pick up while we're at the grocery store anyway. The squirrel won't come up my greased pole but instead took running jumps from the roof to the platform feeder which was under a squirrel baffle *sigh* One of the few disadvantages to not having a yard is not being able to plant a bird feeder in a spot squirrels can't jump to.
DeleteYou have created a lovely peaceful space
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteI wish I could add water feeders, but they are mosquito magnets in my area. And mosquitoes are already bad this year due to all the rain. However, I do love your patio garden. I want mine to look more like yours ad less like mine (grin).
ReplyDeleteWords from a cheapskate. Rearranging costs nothing. Adding new plants and pots does.
Oh, yes, the mosquitoes! I have to empty and refill the water every day.
DeleteI have a lot of nursery pots I've kept over the years, so buying new pots is something I just don't do anymore. I'd be willing to budget for particular plants if only I knew what. As it is, I divide what I have ;) And if I could figure out a good rearrangement I'd be all over that. It's hard to figure out the puzzle pieces, though, when sun is such a huge factor.
The rue didn't come back after dying down completely last year. And I can't find the fennel, though I'm hoping I'll see some come up eventually.
Your patio looks amazing. Does you honeysuckle fill the air with the best fragrance? I've never planted it up here. I actually love container gardening and mixing it with planted plants. You do have a fantastic spot there. Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteThis is the red native honeysuckle, and I don't notice a scent. Hummingbirds do like it, tho. It didn't bloom last year, so this is a real treat :)
DeleteI like a contained space like an enclosed patio. Yours looks lovely. DH says hummingbirds nest in our honeysuckle. We have what seems like miles of it covering a fence.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought about putting the honeysuckle against the fence, but that'd be fun to try. Thx! I've never seen a hummingbird nest in real life. That'd be exciting!
DeleteGorgeous! What a wonderful life!!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy June!!!

Ah, the life of patio ease :)
DeleteYour patio looks lovely. It must be nice sitting there when the weather is nice. Beautiful flowers.
ReplyDeleteThx! Yes, It's pleasant out there. And we have a good view of it from inside, too, so it's enjoyable to look out on even when the weather is bad.
DeleteOh, it looks so lovely just the way it is! Such a perfect place to sit and have a cuppa or a nice lunch...oh my! :)
ReplyDeletePatio People of the World Unite! The flower weather will come to your patio soon :) We're already getting highs in the 90s here :)
DeleteYour patio looks like a very pleasant place to spend time and drink a cuppa. Enjoy! Valerie
ReplyDeleteIt's such a peaceful spot :)
DeleteI planted an eastern redbud about 8 yrs ago. It took about 3-4 yrs to flower in the spring but now I look forward to it's blooms each spring, beautiful. How big is your patio it doesn't look big enough for a tree?
ReplyDeleteIt's about 17'x24'. The people on one side of me have an old pink dogwood, which is what inspired me. I planted a small pink dogwood on the other side of the fence from theirs but am going to transplant it to a pot. I'm hoping it survives the change. It may since it's still quite small. The redbud is starting off in a pot, and I have a tree-sized pot to move it into when it gets big enough. The HOA is having trouble with a couple of oak trees that people planted on their patios several decades ago not somehow realizing that they were too close to the buildings/fences. I mean, how do you not realize? The people who own those townhouses now aren't happy to discover how expensive tree-pruning is. I've decided there's no way these 2 trees kept in pots will ever get large enough to cause a problem. what do you think?
DeleteI've never had a dogwood before, but I grew up with redbud trees and love them, everything about them :)
The pots should limit the size of the trees. I had a lilac in a pot and it rooted to the ground through the drain hole. When I moved the pot this spring it must have broke the root I think I killed it. Good luck
DeleteThe pots will sit on the slate patio surface, so I'm hoping to avoid them rooting through the drainage hole. I've never had lilac. That sounds delightful.
DeleteLilacs have a real pleasant aroma
DeleteMy lavender has a pleasant scent, but it's not nearly as strong as I'd thought it would be. The herbs also don't have as noticeable a scent as I keep thinking they should. I'd like something with more presence but that wasn't overpowering. I can't find anything that does that.
DeleteSuch a lovely space to sit in. A Redbud is one of the most beautiful spring flowering trees (In my opinion)oh I would so like one. We were invaded on Friday by 6 baby squirrels - it was their, or seemed to be, their first day out. What a mess they made in my yard playing! I had to take all the feeders down.
ReplyDeleteI woke up these morning to 3 little squirrels exploring the mealworm feeder. I wouldn't mind them so much if I hadn't once had squirrels in the attic. My daddy called then "tree rats" lol
Deletenice spot with beautiful flowers to sit and relax.
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful day
Thank you :) It is a comfortable place :)
DeleteIt's lovely, D. it sounds to me as if you've already made quite few changes this year. Just enjoy! Your healthy lunch looks yummy. Eileen xx
ReplyDeleteI just sometimes I get in a re-arrangement mood where I want a more dramatic change. But, yes, this is enjoyable just like it is, thx :)
DeleteI've gotten to where I try to get in as many fruits and veggies at lunch as I can. I'm glad I'm not on a low-carb meal plan lol
Wow, your summer patio is looking amazing! Such beautiful views and flowers! It's lovely to sit outside and enjoy a cuppa or lunch, isn't it and your pretty mug is so summery and oh that lunch looks delicious too - yum ... I'm so hungry now ...lol 😉. I hope you had a lovely week and weekend! Happy and creative wishes! Jo x
ReplyDeleteI enjoy having a variety of mugs, and I change them out seasonally. I like this one for summertime. It's nice to have a handy space outside :)
DeleteWe've had beautiful weather, but the rains have returned *sigh* and are predicted to be with us through the week.
