Minnie Riperton
A month from today on July 12 is the anniversary of the death of Minnie Riperton in 1979. She was 31 years old when she died of breast cancer. It still shocks me when I realize how young she was. Her vocal range was remarkable.

So young. so very sad.
ReplyDeleteI just wanna cry :( And then recently we've had Dr John and Leon Redbone who weren't young but who meant a lot to me over the years.
DeleteThat is very young. Sad.
ReplyDeleteI remember how shocking it was at the time :(
DeleteNever heard of her, but it's really sad when they are taken so young.
ReplyDeleteShe was very popular throughout the 70s while I was in high school and college. And that one song "Lovin' You" was _everywhere_ after it was released in 75. Her diagnosis came not long after that.
DeleteAlways sad when people die so young. I wasn't able to listen to her because of the copyright rules here....Sorry! Enjoy your day, Valerie
ReplyDeleteIf you have access to Spotify you can listen to her there. Her vocal range is what usually gets mentioned when her name comes up, and it's interesting to hear her: https://open.spotify.com/artist/2i1IdHG5w0wiSmJGoqAGlj?si=3dukzlvURZOENABLOtPMZg

Yes, so sad :(
DeleteI remember what a shock it was when she died. She had such a unique voice--like an angel.
ReplyDeleteI think she was my first introduction to the concept of "whistle register".
DeleteShe had such an amazing voice 😁. Such a shame she died so young. I hope you've had a lovely week! Jo x
ReplyDeleteI wonder if they could've saved her now that treatment options have improved so much. But people still die of breast cancer, so there's no telling. Her voice was amazing. Such a range!
