This year is Memphis' Bicentennial, and -as you can imagine- there are events and celebrations all year. There's a timeline of our city's history here. The Memphis library site has a collection of digital photos from our past online here.
Here's an 11-minute history of Memphis music:
Walkin' in Memphis:
Happy Birthday, Memphis! I really enjoyed the videos and learning about another place in Hic Sunt Dracones =^,.^=
ReplyDeleteThank you. This city has had some rough times, but it's good to focus on the positive every once in a while :)
DeleteNow, even I have heard of Memphis! Happy birthday! Valerie
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteOur church Columbia United Methodist turned 200 in 2018 the whole bicentennial concept allowed us to explore our roots. I'm sure Memphis will be a fun place to explore as it remembers.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy
Church anniversaries are wonderful opportunities to look back, have reunions, remember loved ones from the past... Sometimes churches don't realize the impact they've had through the generations unless they take the time to really look. I know y'all enjoyed your celebration :)
DeleteWhat a wonderful celebration ... yes indeed Happy Birthday Memphis. Interesting videos. A time to celebrate. I don't recall ever getting as far as Memphis on my many trips to Tennessee, our visits were mostly to Nashville & the little place my sister lived just outside of Nashville.
ReplyDeleteNashville is a different experience, and I've enjoyed my trips there and to Chattanooga. I know people in Franklin and Mt. Juliet, both outside Nashville, and they love it there :)
DeleteNow that's something to celebrate! We have been to Memphis a few times, it's a wonderful place and I enjoyed watching the video about the history and listening to the music - perfect 😁. Happy Friday and Weekend! Hugs, Jo x
ReplyDeleteThank you! :)
DeleteHappy birthday Memphis! I really enjoyed the history of music from Memphis. I didn't know that Stax was from Memphis. I remember all those artists well but just assumed that they were from Detroit.
ReplyDeleteI have just looked it up on the map so now I also know where it is.
Loved the marc Cohn song. I have a friend who is a professional musician and he does a cover version of that song, so every time I hear it I think of him. Great sone.
Thanks for sharing.
Have a great weekend,
Lisca
Oh, yes, Memphis is Home of the Blues and Stax did blues, as well as soul, gospel, and funk. I've actually never toured their museum, but it's on my list of things I want to go to. Detroit also has a strong blues connection.
DeleteHappy belated birthday, Memphis. I've always loved visiting there, except it I prefer to visit anytime except summer. It's a city that stole my heart the first time I visited Mud Island. I am sure you have great pride in it, too. And of course, there's no better music scene than Beale Street.
ReplyDeleteNot belated :) as we're celebrating the whole year :) I love summers here, but I was born here and love the humid heat lol I'd freeze to death in your neck of the woods ;)
