Star Trek Beyond is a 2016 science fiction film, the third film in the reboot series starring John Cho, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Anton Yelchin as alternate universe original series Enterprise crew. Idris Elba is the villain. These are great fun if you can get past the fact that this isn't the original series. This is not the Star Trek universe of my youth.
trailer:
Rolling Stone has a positive review. Empire Online says it is "A return to fun, and a return to form for the new version of the old Trek." Rotten Tomatoes has a critics rating of 85%.
I loved the new cast in this especially Karl Urban who had Bone's (and De Kelley's) character down pat. I could have happily done away with Scotty's, little alien buddy, and the romance between Spock and Uhura. The PDA was just too much and out of character.
Yes, the Bones character was the best of them, and I agree he got the character perfectly. I hated that they decided to use Scotty as comic relief; I found that a betrayal of the character :( I just have to remember that these aren't really prequels but are alternative universe characters. It's the only way I can get enjoyment out of them.
I must admit we tried to like, we really tried, but for me it didn't connect me to the characters. Mr Man is a die hard fan, so anything Trek he'll re-watch.
I'm a fan from the beginnings of The Original Series, so at this point I feel like I owe it to them to give each new try a chance. That said, I'm not paying a subscription fee for this new series or for the Picard one. If it ever comes to a place I can watch them without added fees I'll do that.
I couldn't get into Star Trek when it came back in reruns (I never saw it in its original release). I called it (TOS) The Old Stuff. I couldn't get into Shatner and his pregnant pauses. I enjoyed reruns of Next Gen and saw DS9 and Voyager in reruns, too. I liked what I saw in the trailer, but agree it's not the same. Not disappointing, either.
First I loved Spock, then Kirk, then Bones :) I'm definitely Team Kirk in the Kirk/Picard argument ;) I was crushed when TOS was cancelled. I'm currently re-watching Voyager in nightly binges.
If Kirk had been anyone but Shatner, I might have enjoyed the series. I loved Spock, and I felt Bones was comic relief. I couldn't say anything nice about Kirk and his chauvinistic ways, though.
I always got a kick out of Shatner lol The chauvinism runs deep throughout movies and tv even now. I've had to learn to voice my critiques while still learning to appreciate the works. Action movies and westerns and horror are rife with it. I always enjoyed the Bones/Spock interactions as providing humor but never saw a single original series character as the butt of the comic relief as I saw Scotty used in the re-boot. The Kirk/Spock interplay and slash culture had long-term repercussions throughout fandom. There's just been so much there for me through the years as I've explored issues through science fiction. ST:TOS is a big part of that history.
I really liked these films. It amazed me how well they did at matching the original Star Trek characters. You never know how films are going to compare to the original, but I'd give these high marks for the most part. I think I need to rewatch them. I think we have them on DVD. Happy almost (or maybe it is) Friday. hugs-Erika
You never know if they'll betray fond memories. I was pleased for the most part with just the use of Scotty as comic relief being a problem for me. Watching them again, that's not as bad as it had struck me at first. I was especially impressed with Bones and will certainly watch any new ones if they make them. Last I heard there was one in development.
I always watched the Star Trek episodes when I was younger, they were great! I have never watched any of the recent films as I loved the original characters 😀. Glad to know they are comparable maybe I should give them a try 😉. Happy wishes! Jo x
You do have to let go of your childhood Star Trek; but alternate universe versions of the characters were there even in the original series, so I'm good with it :)
Because this blog does not consist of a single focus topic I chose the name Divers and Sundry where "Divers" means being of many and various kinds, and "Sundry" means consisting of a haphazard assortment of different kinds.

DeleteThese movies are great fun, if you ignore the changes they made from the original series.
ReplyDeleteYes. Exactly. I have to keep reminding myself.

DeleteI found this disappointing in comparison to the great originals. Valerie
ReplyDeleteYes. It makes me wish once again that they'd quit recycling old characters and come up with some new ideas. I love Expanse, for example.
