Senses of Cinema opens with this:
Of all the films to have faced censorship battles in the English-speaking world, there are few as apparently innocuous as Alice au Pays des Merveilles (Alice in Wonderland, Lou Bunin, Dallas Bower and Marc Maurette, 1949). An often-overlooked adaptation of the beloved Lewis Carroll novel, the 1949 film was the first screen incarnation of the story to make substantial use of animation. Its troubled production history offers a textbook example of how the state and the commercial sector can each work to crush artistic endeavours.TCM has information.

I need advice on watercolors: I don't get good color from the little school watercolor sets I've been using. Can y'all suggest watercolors that give richer color that don't require a rich budget? Maybe a middle-of-the-road option? Thanks!

Good morning, I loved your atc's this week. crayola has nice paints but am anxious to see what others suggest.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that about the movie-Happy T wishes Kathy
Never seen this version of Alice. Nice ATCs. My water colours are good and not too expensive, they're from Winsor and Newton. Valerie
ReplyDeleteI didn't know they made an animated version of the book. Your assortment of ATCs is lovely. I especially like the owl. Happy T-Day!
ReplyDeleteI have not seen that version of the movie so I will try and find it to watch on TCM. What a delightful collection of ATCS- I couldn't pick a favorite-they're all so good:):) I have dabbled in watercolors. I have a set of Reeves- which are inexpensive and pretty good. I graduated to Peerless watercolors(the pigments are on papers not in tubes and better than the Reeves in my opinion). And since I signed up for a watercolor exploration class I have gotten a few Daniel Smith watercolors- expensive, yes, but everyone swears by the quality and I want to see what kind of difference it makes. I did get them on sale at Dick Blick online. Hope this helps. Happy T day!
ReplyDeleteSuch a fun movie choice and perfect for T Day, I'm not sure of I have seen this version so will check it out 😀. I have Zig Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolour paints and the colours are so vibrant but they are on the expensive side, I haven't tried any others. Your ATCs amazing! I love all your designs and can't pick a favourite 😀. Thanks for the inspiration and wishing you a very happy T Tuesday! Jo x
ReplyDeletei only know the alice version with johnny depp. i liked it (but it was not necessary to have it made in 3-d, if you ask me).
ReplyDeletewonderful array of atcs - you are on a roll!!
happy t-day:)
I've never seen any Alice movies. To be honest, I don't even know the story of Alice in Wonderland. However, I plan to watch this one tonight. It's absolutely perfect for T this Tuesday, too.
ReplyDeleteI love your ATCs. I especially like Memphis, the rubbing, the owl, and transport. I'll have that song in my head all day.
As for watercolors, I only have ONE tube. I had to buy it for a project a few years ago. I've only used it once and it was VERY expensive. Like around $6.00 for a teeny tiny tube. Not something you would want to buy for ATCs you make for yourself. I can't really suggest any watercolors, because I simply don't use them. Did you ever consider buying inexpensive craft paint and watering it down a bit? Not sure it's the same, but I often water my craft paint down when I want a wash on my book pages.
Alice in Wonderland https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice%27s_Adventures_in_Wonderland is a classic I've loved since I first read it in childhood. I'd highly recommend the book, which can be read online with the original delightful illustrations: https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/c/carroll/lewis/alice/ Honestly, I envy you reading it for the first time. Such a joy!
DeleteI like the watercolors, but the ones I have are cheap/chalky and have no depth. Acrylics just seem different somehow when I add water to them. I'd be interested in one of those multi-tube sets instead of my kiddie set, but I'm not wanting to pay anywhere near $6 a tube. These little ATCs on index card stock aren't worth that kind of expense.
Yet another reason to sign up for JoAnn's and Michael's coupons. Chalky also describes some of my watered down acrylic paint.
DeleteI signed up for the JoAnn's emails. Now I just need to go down there lol I've tried to sign up with Michael's, but they won't send me anything either email or snail mail. It's the oddest thing. They're close, though, and I've started going by there every once in a while.
DeleteI've been shocked at how expensive stencils are. I found a couple at Dollar Tree, which was nice.
I get the coupons sent through the mail. That way I don't have to print anything off.
DeleteMichael's told me they had to send you an APP for your phone, but the cashiers couldn't give it to you.
Stencils are out of this world. Simply outrageous. I've not seen any at my Dollar Tree, though. If you have a Tuesday Morning in your area, they have some really nice and some decent 6" X 6" stencils for $2.99. I also got a couple of 12" X 12" stencils for the same price. They are name brand (TWC), too. Even on sale at JoAnn's I can't afford their stencils.
I can't talk Michael's into sending me snail mail, tho I've tried. They told me they do everything through email, but I keep giving them my email addy and getting nothing. The last time I asked they said I should just check their website for coupons while I'm in the store. I should do that next time. I haven't checked for a Michael's app. I'll see what they've got. Thx!
DeleteWe do have a Tuesday Morning close to us, but the few stencils I've seen there were about $5 iirc. Even at Amazon the "cheap" stencils are $8 last I checked.
The problem with Tuesday Morning is, you get what you get. When it's gone, it's gone for good. I had forgotten that YOUR store may not have what mine had. I haven't been for awhile, so the price I paid may no longer be viable. I must check out Michael's web site, but their 2 stores are SO far away from anywhere I normally shop (like 15 + miles), I find it hard to get motivated to go there.
DeleteOur Michael's and Tuesday Morning are in the same shopping center along with Dollar Tree just a few blocks from me lol so I hit the jackpot! Close is much better. My only problem with JoAnn's is that they're pretty far from anywhere else I go. They're having a sale this week-end, and yet I didn't go :( It helps that I'm learning what to look for, so I can check out my closer options regularly.
DeleteNow, if only I can figure out the difference between Mod Podge (which I have a jar of) and the various other products like "Liquitex Matte Medium," etc. The shelves have rows and rows of so many things.
Lovely ATCs, D. This week I favor the owl, the jet plane and Memphis.
ReplyDeleteI used Prang pan paints exclusively until Jo introduced me to Zig Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolor paints. Now I use them both. In my opinion, Prang pan paints have the most intense pigments of student grate watercolor paints. When I want more intense color, I use the Gansai Tambi.
Happy T-day! Eileen xx
It was a good movie clip showing the Mad Hatters tea party.
ReplyDeleteAll you ATC's look great I love the floral ones.
I have an old water colour set and some Spectrum Aqua pens that I use.
Happy T day wishes.
Yvonne xx
I'm appreciating the watercolor suggestions. Thanks! I need all the advice I can get :)
ReplyDeleteI especially like the one with the

I don't think I've ever seen this version.
ReplyDeletePretty ATCs. Most are quite springy. :) :)
Wonderful all your ATCs... as always !! Love all of them, very nice colours, and designs, so clever !!
ReplyDeleteMy watercolours are from a school set, I don´t use them very much, because I´ll normally use acrylic paints. But I learn here about them. Lovely movie today ! thanks so much.
I wish you a very nice Friday,
Big hugs, Caty
