Jiraiya the Hero

Jiraiya the Hero is a 1921 Japanese silent short (20 minutes) film directed by Shōzō Makino.

There are interesting special effects.

  1. Took a look. I liked how the hero appears and disappears. Thought the appearing/disappearing frog was pretty fun, too.

    1. The old movies did a remarkable job with special effects, I think. I did get a kick out of the frog lol

  2. I wonder if all the Japanese still wore kimono on a daily basis in 1921.Or if they went traditional for the film/story. I don't know when they went to western dress. Thanks for sharing. It was interesting to watch. And happy weekend too. :)

    1. The story is of legendary days, so that's be why more traditional dress was shown in the film. There's an interesting history of the clothing here: http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/h/a-history-of-the-kimono/

  5. I was never really sure what was going on or why but it was amusing to see the choreographed fighting scenes and the magical vanishing guy and frog, etc. :)

    1. The Imdb https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0488015/ says, "The story of Jiraiya, a legendary ninja with great powers who set off on a adventure." An adventure tale. Those fighting scenes were fun, weren't they, and I did enjoy the special effects :)
