The New York Times has a review from the time of the film's release that says, "A half-hearted attempt to document nocturnal Chicago as the "City That Never Sleeps" rarely camouflages the routine crime melodrama". Slant Maggazine gives it 2.5 out of 5 stars and concludes by calling it "A hard-ass noir softened not so much by the sight of gams-centric cheesecake as its quasi-mystical poaching and repurposing on The Naked City’s turf".
I would never have thought of Chill Wills in a film noir as I always associate him with Westerns especially alongside John Wayne.
ReplyDeleteHe was in a huge number of films from '34-'78. He also sang and did the voice for Francis the talking mule lol Quite a varied career, but you're right -I think of him as being a western actor.
DeleteOverall, this wasn't a bad film, although at times, I thought it could have gone a bit faster, or left out what I thought was filler. Other than that, it wasn't a bad film. Thanks for the link and sharing the entire film with us.
ReplyDeleteThose 50s crime films are a genre unto themselves, aren't they! It's like a slice out of time, their concerns and how they talk and interact with each other. I think history classes ought to show realistic films from the period being studied as a way to get into the mind of the times lol
