Only Yesterday is a 1991 animated drama film intended for an adult audience. It's a sweet story about a young woman, city-born and lifelong Tokyo resident, who is traveling to the countryside to help with the safflower harvest. She reminisces on the journey. I watched it on HBO Max.
trailer:
Roger Ebert's site calls it "breathtakingly beautiful and quietly but devastatingly moving". Rotten Tomatoes has a critics consensus score of 100%.

The girlies and I love the Studio Ghibli films. I see they recycle their characters, too. This film has Satsuki from Totoro 😻
ReplyDeleteI guess I don't know Totoro as well as I thought. I don't see that character here.
Delete...1991 seems like only yesterday.
ReplyDeleteikr?!
DeleteI would never have guessed from the view on your post this is for adults, but then I like kids movies and cartoons still, so I would try it anyhow. But, right now we don't have HBO Max. I might be able to see it on youTube. Happy August.
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of animated films that aren't for kids. Castlevania comes to mind.
DeleteThis is probably not one I'd watch (there are few animated things I watch), but it sounds lovely. I sure do miss Ebert, don't you? Hope you're having an awesome day! Hugs, RO
ReplyDeleteI just happened across it. I'd never heard of it before. I miss Ebert, but at least they found a way to keep his website active.
DeleteI am not sure why, but animated movies just are not my thing.
ReplyDeleteEverything can't suit everybody :)
DeleteAlthough this sounds excellent, I don't think it's one I would watch.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
I watch more movies than most.
DeleteI have enjoyed a few Studio Ghibli shorts. I don't have HBO Max, so can't watch it.
ReplyDeleteWhen we got rid of cable we never thought we'd subscribe to any of the streaming services. We lucked into a year of Amazon Prime, though, and were hooked. We subscribe to Netflix, too, and HBO Max and it's _still_ a lot cheaper than cable ever was lol So _much_ to watch!
DeleteThis is definitely not my thing, but thanks! Valerie Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI'm broadening my horizons ;)
DeleteI'd probably watch this if I had HBO/HBO Max. -I have to say, so many streaming services is becoming a problem for me. I don't have enough time to watch THAT much media and things are being so spread out. Right now there are things I'd like to see on HBOMax, Britbox, Apple, Amazon, Hulu, and who knows what else, along with the two I have, Acorn and Netflix, which I can't even "finish" or exhaust, plus what comes free via Roku. And who can afford ALL of those? Or dedicate a whole month (or week) to "Free Trial"? It's a dilemma.
ReplyDeleteI wish they'd specialize more. We have Netflix and Prime and Britbox through Prime. We did the free trial of HBO Max and when the time came for it to end we said, "Well, maybe one month we'll pay." We're taking it a month at a time ;) We tried Acorn but liked Britbox better, and they seemed so similar... I'd love Hulu (I remember when they offered a few things free every month, and I watch a lot of those), but we hafta draw the line somewhere. We don't have Roku, our tv is from the beforetimes before there was such a thing. We did the free trial of Disney+ but cancelled after that month was up.
DeleteI keep repeating to myself, "It's so much cheaper than cable" to make myself feel better ;)
When you get a smart TV, get Roku -- there's some good free stuff and the roku express is only about $30. I got mine "free" when I pledged to our PBS station for Downton Abbey! I've had Acorn for awhile. I'd love to add Britbox but it feels too indulgent to have both and there's still Acorn stuff that is their own. I still have bundled cable with internet and phone but as soon as I get a new phone, sometimes this fall, I will drop it and I will probably drop the cable and add another streaming service. It couldn't be more expensive!
DeleteI could buy one of those Roku devices I see at Target. You tempt me :)
DeleteYes, that's how I felt: that having both Britbox _and_ Acorn was maybe overdoing it lol We found cable much more expensive than these streaming services. Our phone service is through Verizon because of an "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" laziness. Our internet is through AT&T, which doesn't seem to get chewed by squirrels as much as Comcast did.
Ah, modern technology. I should count my blessings. I know some folks in rural TN who get very unreliable dish service and some are dealing with dial-up speeds. Talk about a need for updated infrastructure!
