Gold Diggers Of 1933 is a 1933 pre-code musical directed by Mervyn LeRoy and Busby Berkeley and starring Warren William, Joan Blondell, Aline MacMahon, Ruby Keeler, and Dick Powell. You can watch it online here.
Here's a trailer:
It's listed in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die. Rotten Tomatoes has a critics consensus rating of 100%.
I finally checked out this site for the list of movies. I saw from the trailer the famed Ginger Rogers was in this. I like that both men & women wear hats & oh the costumes!
How do you rate this film? It is always interesting to see how as a viewer it compares to the critics. Of course you watch so many films, you could be a critic, I think. Hope it was a good Monday.
I'm a film watcher but not a critic. I wish I knew enough to offer a critical view -you know, with an eye to film history and acting and directing styles, but I just enjoy watching movies. I enjoyed this one, but I wonder why some of them made the cut of 1,001 films and I've given away the actual book that explained the choices.
Now you are talking my language -- movie musicals (and especially the Busby Berkeleys of the 30s.) "Remember My Fogotten Man," "We're in the Money" -- is "Shadow Waltz in that one? It's a stunner.
Musicals were often on the afternoon movies growing up and I have seen loads of them. This one sounds familiar for sure. Escapist entertainment during the war. :)
Because this blog does not consist of a single focus topic I chose the name Divers and Sundry where "Divers" means being of many and various kinds, and "Sundry" means consisting of a haphazard assortment of different kinds.
Hmmm, I'm not a fan of musicals.
ReplyDeleteI love them!

DeleteMusicals were the bread and butter of the 30s and 40s movies. I am always glad to see a musical. I'll try to watch this soon,
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy it. It's definitely enthusiastic :)
DeleteThe gold diggers of today are the bankers and politicians! Not so funny. Valerie
ReplyDeleteA new gilded age. It's deplorable, to borrow Hillary Clinton's description.
