An Uncertain Place

An Uncertain Place is the 8th book in the Commissaire Adamsberg Mystery series by Fred Vargas. Back in the olden days when I could spend hours browsing used book store shelves I came across a couple of these books and have enjoyed them. The team he works with is not what I'm used to, and it's always fun to find a detective who surprises.

from the back of the book:
When Commissaire Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg, the chief of police in Paris's seventh arrondissement, is called to the scene of a ghastley and highly unusual murder, he thinks it can't have anything to do with the nine pairs of shoes and severed feet discovered outside of London's Highgate Cemetery just a few days earlier. With the help of the murdered man's gifted physician, Adamsberg delves into the victim's psyche and unexpectedly finds himself on a path that takes him deep into the haunted past of Eastern Europe, where a centuries-old horror has come to life. This is an investigation unlike any that Adamsberg has undertaken before - and one that someone on the inside is ready to stop at any cost.

  4. I have the first book in this series after it being recommended by a friend with similar reading tastes. I have it on my bedside to read stack. I'll check it out. And my new second hand reading it Amazon. It's dangerous as I can book shop anytime (really missing bookstores), and when I find a like new second hand copy cheap temptation gets to me. Happy weekend.

    1. I haven't looked at Amazon for used books. I do still have a couple of stacks of science fiction books a friend gave me and the books I got as Christmas presents. We'll see how long that lasts ;)

  5. Goodness--feet with shoes on. Sounds like an intriguing mystery right off the bat! :)

    1. That part reminded me of that news story about feet that sometimes wash up on beaches.

    2. Yes, really less creepy than an entire body, I suppose. I have seen that happen in detective shows, too. A mystery that is more difficult to solve, for sure.

  7. I don't know this guy! And I think we have to get acquainted. Especially if he works in the Paris 7th. I love reading books set in areas I know -- I feel like I have an added insight into the atmosphere. This one sounds good.

And oh, how I miss bookstores.

    1. Yes, bookstores :( That hurts as much as anything else.
