Golen Hair

Golden Hair (1914):

by Nicolai Fechin, who died on October 5, 1955, at the age of 73. His former house in Taos, New Mexico, is maintained as the Taos Art Museum at Fechin House. There are a few photos of the place here.

On a personal note, I read that a low-carb diet can help decrease sinus-related issues so am trying to alter my diet with that in mind. I considered a Keto diet, but I can't eat that much fat and weight loss is not my goal anyway. I'm having success over the last 2 weeks in keeping my daily carbs under 50 grams. I didn't think I'd miss sweets, but I do. I've discovered that a chocolate chip cookie is 7 carbs and half a Hersey chocolate bar is 10, so I'm including them as I can. I'm thankful for chicken salad, tuna salad, and eggs lol. I'll take a break from it around Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, but I'll eat fewer carbs than I usually do during those holidays. I have no interest in using wheat flour alternatives or sugar alternatives. I've added raspberries, celery sticks, and more veggie salads to my meals. I quartered some tortilla shells and small naan breads and salted and baked them to use one at a time with the chicken/tuna salads.

That cup above is Swiss Mocha, at 10 grams of carbs, for dessert. Little treats are a good thing.

Please join me at Bleubeard and Elizabeth's weekly T Stands for Tuesday blogger party, though the pesky squirrels have chewed the AT&T lines she counts on for internet access. We'll start the tea but keep plenty warm for her until she can join us. All willing to share a beverage with us are welcome. And there's no rush; it's not like these blog posts are going away if you're a bit late๐Ÿ˜„

  1. I like Nickolai's bright and bold colors. I found Keto hard to maintain for weight loss. Mainly because I hate cheese so there wasn't much for me to snack on, and I'm not much of a grazer. I hope the low carb diet help with the sinus issues. Though I don't care for coffee, I do love your square cup. Happy T Day

    1. I like cheese, but I just can't eat so much fat... all that cream in coffee and such. But the added protein was something I needed to do anyway.

    2. Cream in tea was decadently delicious. I've gone back to fat-free Half n Half

  2. Love those rich beautiful reds and golds in the girls' hair. I like how you're approaching your diet change by balancing it with a few treats here and there. Love your square coffee cup and dish. Happy T day!

  3. Beautiful painting, D. Another artist you've introduced me too. I love his work.

Good luck with your low carb diet. I hope it helps with your sinuses. I would miss sweets too. I switched from candy bars to Hershey's Kisses because just a couple are enough to satisfy my sweet tooth.

    Happy T-day! Eileen xx

  5. Such a beautiful painting! The richness of the colours remind me of autumn and I love the teacup and saucer on that wonderful tablecloth too ๐Ÿ˜€. Sounds like your new dietary requirements are going well, I can't eat too much fat either. Wishing you a very Happy T Day! Hugs, Jo x

  8. thanks for introducing another new to me artist-I always enjoy these.
I think the keto diet is really difficult, and not many that I know of can really stick with it for life-although I do have two friends that doing really well. it helped me out to read through things to discover how high in carbs many foods are that I wouldn't have thought of. so we are doing the same keeping carbs down to 30 to 50 a day-I love to snack on the things opposed to eating meals-I am bad that way. what really helped us out was eating a breakfast and then just one main meal a day around 2 pm my husband loves sandwiches-just cutting out all that bread really helped good luck with everything hugs Kathy and Happy T

    1. I don't eat breakfast, but I don't snack. That was helpful in getting started with this. I miss toast with lots of orange marmalade lol That used to be a go-to dessert for me.

It sounds like your diet is going well, its hard to get started but worth it in the long term.
    Happy T day wishes.

  11. I've been to the Fechin house. I didn't know anything about him before that but he is an amazing artist. Thanks for sharing that photo. I didn't know about low carb and sinuses but I will be curious to hear how it works. I often have a nice cup of flavored tea for dessert. It is definitely healthier than a big piece of pie, but that doesn't mean there's never pie. Hope it was a happy T day. Hugs-Erika

  12. A beautiful painting, the hair on the girls is lovely, the colours are stunning.
Well done for keeping on with your diet, I’m not very good at sticking to one, in summer we eat lots of salads and in winter we eat lots of veggies as we love them but I sometimes have the urge for something sweet, usually when I am trying hard not too. loL

  14. As you know, due to health issues since June I am basically on a Keto diet with my DIL and now my son is on it, too. I'm a black coffee girl and no way can I drink that weird Keto coffee with butter and cream and whatever in it. Yuck!

I can only take so much fat, too. I like lean meats. Do like dairy, though. (And I have always wondered if dairy is also a contributing factor to my chronic sinus issues?) Basically I cut out the pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, sweets...and look at labels now. I haven't been counting carbs, though. But Leah guesses I am between 25-50 a day. Now that I am reading labels--I must have been eating many hundreds before! Goodness!

I'll be curious to hear the results of the 19 additional blood tests the rheumatologist ordered. She told me to stay on Keto/low carb. I go back on the 24th--maybe will finally get a diagnosis?

I miss my toast, too...and my bean & veggie soups...and my hotdishes (staples before). But not nearly as much as I thought I would. I used to drink my French Vanilla International coffee quite regularly. I will have to check the carbs (stuck it in the pantry). That sounds like a blissful treat!

Good luck! To us both! :)

    1. Well, we had a family birthday today lol, so I had a cupcake and a bit of ice cream. I went over 50 carbs, but not way over. I may hafta increase carbs just because of the fatigue. I can't eat enough fat to make up for the decrease in carbs, so I don't know if decreasing carbs at this level will help the sinus problems or even if that's a thing that works for anybody. *sigh*

I hope your dr has answers for you. It makes such a difference when you can decide on treatment based on a diagnosis. I miss lentil soup and such as the promise of cooler weather approaches.

  15. Very interesting. I read a little about the house, and was struck by the fact he did "triptych windows" because that is a technique I have tried in paper crafting. :) Your international coffee sounds yummy. I was just esposed to what the Keto diet was , this past weekend. Our retreat cooked with cream in everything. uhm, doesn't sound like a diet to me! LOL Happy belated t day!

    1. My sinus-related cough sometimes lasts well into the winter, so this was worth a try for me. I can't tell that it's helping 2 weeks in.

  17. Your Swiss mocha drink looks good. It is good to have little treats, when you're restricting what foods you eat. I hope it helps with your sinus related issues. Happy Belated T-Day!

  18. I'm very sorry I'm late visiting. I got back online just in time to learn there was going to be a hard freeze tonight. I spent the entire day cutting back my herbs and getting the ones I could lift into the house. The others I couldn't lift, I covered tonight with sheets. It's supposed to get down to 24 F overnight, so that is a very hard freeze after a day of 80 plus F yesterday. No wonder everyone I know is sick.

Your Golden Hair painting is beautiful. I like the artist's style.

I bought some Naan bread last week and drizzled heated butter over it. I enjoyed it with veggies. I wish I had considered tuna. Now you have made me hungry (grin). I love Swiss Mocha. I love all their International coffees.

It's hard giving up carbs. I would miss pasta, something I eat at least once a week. And I can't give up my ice cream, at least not until winter sets in. I hate to think how many carbs are in that. I think I could give up candy bars, because I don't buy many of them, but I would hate to give up muffins and bagels. Maybe I should come and stay with you awhile and learn to give up these things I love so much (JOKE).

Thanks for sharing the lovely painting and the International Swiss Mocha coffee with us for T this week. Now I'm off to see what else I've missed.

    1. 1/4 cup of chocolate moose tracks has 12 grams of carbs ;) I miss pasta and brown rice. I'm told there are veggie pastas in the produce section and plan on looking for those. Our family has a couple of birthdays this month, and I've had a couple of high carb days but never over 100 grams a day. That's still a lot lower than the average diet, so I'm hoping those splurges won't be too hard on my attempts to do this. I'm keeping fruit but switching from mainly blueberries to more blackberries and raspberries and not eating bananas, and I'm making room for treats. Tuna and chicken salads have no carbs to speak of the way I make them, Hoorah! :)
