Stand by Me is a 1986 coming-of-age drama film directed by Rob Reiner based on Stephen King's 1982 novella The Body. It stars Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, and Jerry O'Connell as four boys who set out to find the dead body of a missing boy. It is well respected, considered by many to be one of the most influential films of the 1980s as well as one of the greatest films of all time. The Golden Globes website says, "Almost four decades after its release, Stand by Me – based on true events in Stephen King’s life – remains one of the most poignant Summer coming-of-age films." I had never heard of it but came across it somehow. Coming of age drama films aren't ever a genre I seek out, but this is a powerful film well worth my wandering off my beaten track to watch.

...I only knew the song.
ReplyDeleteIt was a new-to-me movie, too.
DeleteI love this movie. I can't remember whether I read the book a long time ago as I was a big Stephen King fan
ReplyDeleteI've not read the book.
DeleteI really enjoyed this movie! (Stephen King is much better at writing short stories in my opinion.) Surprised you hadn't heard of it.
ReplyDeleteHope you are doing well and staying cool! :)
The A/C is running! I agree his short stories are better. I think he has trouble finding an ending to longer works.
DeleteIt's been ages since I've seen this film, and I wish I remembered it more off the top of my head. But I do remember liking it. I hope you had a great Monday.
ReplyDeleteWe had rain last night, so it's a bit cooler today. That's been nice. We needed the rain.
DeleteWill Wheaton would often refer to this movie when he was a guest on Big Bang Theory ... I guess it is time we found to watch as we are big Star Trek, Next Generation & The Big Bang Theory
ReplyDeleteWil Wheaton is a treasure. You should watch Star Trek: Prodigy. I was so pleased by how they developed his character.
DeleteI saw the movie years ago. It was stellar. I'm glad you found it.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of it. I think I missed everything that came out in the 80s and 90s.
DeleteI thought this was a wonderful film. I'd like to read the book; it's nice to think Stephen King wrote a book that wasn't creepy!
ReplyDeleteikr?! I didn't know he wrote anything but horror.
DeleteI was sure I left a comment, but I sure don't see it. The one that got me was Jerry O'Connell. I barely recognized him from what he turned into as he aged and lost weight.
ReplyDeleteYou may well have another comment pending... I am so far behind!
