In the Tall Grass

In the Tall Grass is 2019 horror film about a pregnant woman and her brother who head off into the tall grass to find a child calling for help only to discover they can't find their way back to the road. It's based on a novella by Stephen King and Joe Hill and probably wasn't enough to warrant a feature-length film. It's perfect if you want horror without gore, slowly building tension, and a satisfying resolution; but it isn't fast-paced. I found it interesting.I watched it on Netflix.

trailer:

Roger Ebert's site closes with this:
Horror has a long history of using the natural world as its enemy. “In the Tall Grass” is at its best when it follows this tradition. We all know what it’s like to be lost, far from home and safety, but what if even the traditional rules of direction were completely haphazard? As it gets less relatable, it gets less interesting, but there’s still Wilson’s all-in performance and Natali’s craftsmanship to keep us engaged, stuck in the grass, praying for a way out.

    1. This one has tension and suspension but isn't what a lot of people seem to view as "horror". There's no blood/gore at all, for example.

  3. Not a typical horror, it looks like it's more more physiological which makes it still too scary for me ...lol 😉. Happy Friday and weekend! Hugs, Jo x

  4. I really like Stephen King, but I don't have Netflix. I'm lucky to have the lowest level of cable I can "buy."

    1. We got rid of cable years ago. Eventually we added Amazon Prime. A while after that we added Netflix. It's still less than we were paying for the lowest tier of cable. Cable may have adjusted their pricing since then, but we'll never go back.

  7. This sounded like Stephen King even before you wrote it was him. Funny I was just thinking about how I need to finish reading the Shining. I put aside because with dark evening, I was getting to be too chicken. That's besides the point. This one sounds like an interesting idea. Happy Saturday.

    1. I saw the movie The Shining long before I read the book and ended up liking the movie better. That's unusual for me.

  9. It sounds like it might be good.

FYI: "The Culling" (2015, I think) is a supernatural movie that is sort of good, but beware of multiple instances of the main characters doing unbelievable things that no one would do in real life. And the "plot reveal" is somewhat disappointing. But I thought the movie did have some scary parts, including one that made me jump, which I haven't done in a long time with a scary movie. Just be forewarned, it is by no means a great movie.

    1. I just finished "The Head". It's a 6-episode miniseries on HBO Max (we're giving that a try), a thriller that takes place in Antarctica. Not bad through the first 5 episodes, but it all fell apart in episode 6. Nothing made sense as anything anyone would've done even if it had been possible, which it wasn't. So disappointing. Similar were "Trapped" and "Fortitude" which I liked much, much better even before "The Head" went off the rails.

      I'll check "The Culling". Thanks!
