She's being instructed by the head of the community not to smoke as they consider it inappropriate for ladies dedicated to Christian endeavor. You can tell by her expression how unimpressed she is by this reprimand.

ReplyDeleteInteresting & I wonder who we'd cast if we were remaking this movie today? Would we using smoking as the catalyst? I'm going to make my own list pulling names from both the Hollywood world & the politics world ... should entertain myself for an hour or two. Happy T day.

ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at the look on Anne Bancroft's face. That was obviously before smoking was banned in all advertising and film. What a fun and truly unique T idea today, dear.

ReplyDeleteNot familiar with this one. As for the smoking it's amazing to watch the movies from the thirties where even the doctors and nurses would smoke in the hospitals and medical offices. And the patients could smoke in their rooms!

ReplyDeleteDidn't look familiar. Not old enough to been on the matinee afternoon movies when I was growing up, I suppose. Graduated in 68 and movies didn't show up on TV back then for many years. :)
ReplyDeleteSmoking, oh, I remember those crazy days! My parents had their own shop and there were ashtrays everywhere, also for customers to use!!! In the car, with us kids in the back.... They smoked everywhere. I was sent to get ciggies for them - as kid! And I got them! (Now here you have to be 18 to buy, but I see still too many kids smoking, ain´t expensive enough yet...)

I've never seen this film, I remember when people smoked in films as it was seen to be sophisticated, so pleased I never smoked.
ReplyDeleteAt the senior school we had different groups in our school year, I was in Flora Robson, they also had Gladys Aylwood and two others.

What an incredible international cast. The backstory on this is interesting with the original star (Patricia Neal) having a stroke and recasting her with Bancroft. And Ford is always good. Thanks for the link.
