Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd

Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd is a 1952 comedy film also starring Charles Laughton and Leif Erickson. You can watch it online here. Sheer silliness, but it's Abbott and Costello so we knew that going in.

  2. ...Abbott and Costello are slapstick at its best.

    1. I don't mind some slapstick. Not the 3 Stooges, though.

  3. I liked Abbott and Costello's slapstick style better than the Three Stooges. I thought they were shameful and never cared for their destructive ways everyone called "humor." They made bullies look tame at times. Just my opinion of course.

    1. Have you heard this old joke:

Q: "What's the difference between men and women?"
A: "Men think the 3 Stooges are funny"

      ;)

    2. Never heard that joke, but it sure seems true.

    3. Jeanie (below) commented that she likes them, so the joke doesn't hold true in all cases. In our house, though, it's always the way. On the other hand "Niagara Falls" gets me acting it out all the time.

    1. I've always liked them. But I like several of the early comedy acts.

  5. I always liked them (but couldn't stand the Three Stooges). Our local movie theather had Saturday matinees that would show several movies the kids could pay once and stay and watch all afternoon. Any time my mom would drop us off for the afternoon movies was a huge treat for us and I had to watch my younger brother and sister. (This must have been hell for the theater owner because it was generally chaos--all kids and no adults with them.) I was always happy when it was an Abbot and Costello day and always so disappointed when it was a Three Stooges day. Never was crazy about the Marx Brothers but they were a big step up from the Stooges who were so cruel to each other. Sometimes they were cowboy movies and I usually liked those...any of the cowboy movies were pretty good. I only remember that lasting for a while in the summer--one year? Possibly two? But it had to be awful that the kids were unleashed and super messy and loud. Amazingly there was no fighting back then because you'd be dragged to the office and parents were called to collect you and you'd be banned. At least that was the word. ;)

    1. My husband is a huge Marx Bros fan lol I've grown to love them :) The 3 Stooges had some good bits, single scenes like Niagara Falls that are priceless, but their longer works hurt me to watch.

I don't remember theater promotions like that when I was little, but when my kids were little there were programs at mall theaters where groups of kids could come and get a great deal. There had to be chaperones for those, though.

    1. I like Laurel and Hardy, too. Some of the old single comedians had great movies, too, like Buster Keaton. He's still funny.

  7. Abbott and Costello were always fun. I'll have to check this one out! (And I love the three stooges! So we'll agree to disagree on that one!)
