The Christmas Story

The Christmas Story is a 1952 2nd season Amos 'n' Andy episode in which Andy needs money and takes a position as a department story Santa and Amos explains the meaning of The Lord's Prayer to his sweet little daughter.

This would've been (when shown in re-runs in the late 50s or early 60s) one of my earliest TV Santas.

I know the controversy about this television series, and being white I don't feel qualified to speak on that. I will say I liked this show when I was quite small and felt a real kinship with some of the characters. I certainly felt more in tune with them than with small town Mayberry or any of the suburban families I saw on TV.

  1. I never watched Amos and Andy. I'm off for a walk this morning but hope to find time when I get home to watch this! If for nothing else, just to have actually seen Amos and Andy.

    1. It was taken off the air because of the controversy. I just never got it.

    1. I saw it in re-runs in the early 60s. I'd have been quite young and you most likely much younger still.

  5. It was before my time, but I remember a professor from my undergrad days told us she could tell a person's values by the TV shows they watched back then. I don't think she was talking about Amos and Andy, or even Mayberry, but the suburban shows where the woman dressed for dinner and fixed the perfect meal for the perfect family with the perfect sons (or daughters) who never got in serious trouble.

    1. Those shows were filling the airwaves back in the day. I was never a fan.

  6. I am sure most TV shows from previous years won't make the cut to what is now acceptable - part of the Cancel Culture :(

I've a new Christmas movie for you - The Christmas Candle. It has stars like Leslie Manning, Barbara Flynn & Susan Boyle (singer) has a singing/speaking part. Predictable but still a nice story & I don't think anyone could be offended :)

    1. Thanks for the suggestion. I've found it online and will watch it later. Cool! I remember Susan Boyle when she first made such a big splash.

    1. The times were different, and it's entirely possible I'd have to be black to understand why that TV show was offensive to them when Sanford and Son, just for example, wasn't. I hope you enjoy this episode. I've always thought it was sweet.

  8. I do remember watching this even though the years they were on were from when I was born till I was four. Must have been reruns at some point? NO specific memories of particular shows but I remember I really enjoyed it. Seeing this, I can see why. Was a very sweet show. Nice memories. I was too young to know anything about any controversy.
