Landscape with Rising Sun

Landscape with Rising Sun:

is a painting by Joseph Michael Gandy. It is a study made December 1, 1828, at 8:30 in the morning under a southwest wind. Gandy died on Christmas Day in 1843, "penniless and anonymous in a darkened [windowless] asylum cell" according to this article from The Guardian. "It is heart-breaking to imagine the darkness of that windowless cell for a man so sensitive to light that he would stop to sketch a rainbow, or the blurry haze of sunrise on a frosty morning." (also from The Guardian) No one knows where he is buried.

  1. His story is so sad. But what a fabulous piece. I am off to look him up to see if there any more of his art. Happy Wednesday!

    1. Ordinarily I'd've posted this on the anniversary of his death, but I couldn't post this on Christmas Day.

  10. Yes, that is heartbreaking. I guess I am glad he had a cell where he could see the sky!
