With a clamor of bells that set the swallows soaring, the Festival of Summer came to the city Omelas, bright-towered by the sea. The rigging of the boats in harbor sparkled with flags. In the streets between houses with red roofs and painted walls, between old moss-grown gardens and under avenues of trees, past great parks and public buildings, processions moved. Some were decorous: old people in long stiff robes of mauve and grey, grave master workmen, quiet, merry women carrying their babies and chatting as they walked. In other streets the music beat faster, a shimmering of gong and tambourine, and the people went dancing, the procession was a dance. Children dodged in and out, their high calls rising like the swallows' crossing flights over the music and the singing. All the processions wound towards the north side of the city

I'll be having a cup of Ugly Mug Hardy Passion coffee with The Husband this morning, and I have plenty of cups and mugs if you'd care to join us. I can even offer tea.
I'll be checking in at Elizabeth's T Stands for Tuesday blogger gathering.

A word about sources for news:
Keeping up with current events is crucial in these days. I watch the daily briefings offered by our joint Memphis/Shelby County task force, and I regularly tune in to see what the state news is from Tennessee's Governor Lee. I used to watch Trump's mini-rallies live but stopped doing that after he bragged about his ratings. It's important to watch him in action, though. Clips and transcripts just don't give the full effect. C-Span's Youtube channel films them live and keeps them available. This one from April 13 is a doozy:
The day after that he said he would adjourn congress so he could make recess appointments. Saturday he said, “I really believe it could have been billions of people [dead from Covid-19] had we not done what we did". He continues to use these briefings as substitutes for the rallies he can't have. It's a disgraceful display.
Y'all know I'm not a Trump fan (and that predates his political career by decades), but he is the president and it behooves us to keep an eye on what he and his crew are up to. We're dying here, literally dying.
I don't have cable, so I can't be tempted by the 24/7 shows they offer. But there's a variety of reliable news sources that I do have access to. You do have to be willing to fact-check even your favored sources. I watch press conferences live as much as I can, but none of us should expect these people to fact-check themselves. We need to read reports and analysis and be aware of the context of what is said and done.
It's important on TV programs to distinguish news coverage from commentary. In written sources, news articles and editorial content are completely different things. Don't condemn the commentators because they're not news. I can't emphasize this enough.
Here's my list. I'd welcome your suggestions.
The Associated Press (AP)
Reuters
PBS
The Atlantic
Foreign Affairs (here's their U.S. coverage)
Politico
Axios
The New Yorker
BBC
The New York Times
The Washington Post
Christian Science Monitor
The Guardian
There's news coverage on ABC News, CBS News, and NBC News (I like Lester Holt).
There's a chart here that might be helpful.
It's not true that all news is #FakeNews or that reporters just make stuff up. It is true that some sources are biased, and that sometimes there are mistakes. A good way to judge a news source is whether or not they issue retractions when they make mistakes.
I find it easy to get a news overview on Twitter by following several reliable sources and scrolling through them. Here's a Twitter list that includes all the ones listed in this post. I don't discuss politics on Twitter, but I get a lot of information from sources there. And it's Trump's favorite venue.
I enjoy discussing politics on Facebook, but I don't get my news there. I think it's important that we talk about these things with people who don't already agree with us -not to convince, but to understand and be understood. Sticking our head in the sand doesn't change what's happening. Refusing to listen to the opposing side just makes us ignorant of all we don't already agree with.
Compare the news coverage from several different sources. Please don't just take Trump's word for it, or the word of any one person for that matter. Like I said, you can't expect these people to fact-check themselves.
November is coming, and the Trump faithful are truly faithful. He was right when he said, "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters." The least we can do is stay informed.
If you stuck with me to the end, thanks for giving me a hearing. Sometimes we just need to have our say. Feel free to have your say in the comments. I'm an equal opportunity political ranter.
I will gladly share a cup of tea with you the one cup on the right looks vintage.
ReplyDeleteHappy T
It is! I picked it up at a local antique mall :)
Deleteawesome!
Delete...why would anyone watch Trump, you can tell when he's lying by watching when his month is moving!
ReplyDeleteI know. It's hard to watch. What have we done?! :(
DeleteTea, yes please & I do like the mug with those pretty cheerful geraniums on it. Politics are probably the most difficult discussions to have right now. As you know we get a lot of coverage of your politics, leader, etc because we get a lot the same TV channels. On my own F/B page I get a lot of political chat from two born & raised relatives living in the USofA & from one living in China. Thanks for the list of reliable news sources.
ReplyDeleteThat mug came from a local book shop years ago. I have some FB friends who are from other countries, and they can't believe the state we're in over here. There's a joke going around on FB that apparently started in Germany: Q: What borders on stupid? A: Mexico and Canada. :(
DeleteThank you for the list of news resources. I get a daily briefing from the NY Times. I've followed stories from the Washington Post (they were the ones that broke the Watergate story) ABC News with David Muir is a must for me. Before David went national to ABC, he got his start here in Boston. I don't watch Trump's campaign rallies any more. My local news station, WCVB will carry part of the Covid Thank Force briefing. When the briefing turns to rants and posturing, the station cuts away to local news. The briefing is made available on the station's free airwave, but I don't bother switching over. I feel Trump is so unpresidential. He doesn't inspire hope or reassurance. Inciting people to riot as Trump did in Michigan, Minnesota, and Virginia, is unconscionable and dangerous. I watch the daily briefing made by Massachusetts governor, Charlie Baker. Like Governor Cuomo of New York, Baker is getting the job done to protect the people of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I'll get off my soapbox now and have that cup of tea you offered. Happy T Day
ReplyDeleteI don't subscribe to the NYT or WaPo, and it's so frustrating to click on a link and hit the paywall :( Thanks for the David Muir suggestion. I've added him to my regular News Twitter list. I love Twitter lists lol
DeleteYes, I agree, the "Liberate" tweets were irresponsible, especially since he had just finished announcing the guidelines and saying state governors were being responsible. I love "Thank Force" lol! I honestly can't help but wonder if all the medical professionals questioning his mental condition might not be right. He still hasn't had his annual physical that was due back in January. Not that we get accurate information from that. They can't even get his height right ;)
Those cups look great, I would love a offee, please. Trump is just a disgrace for the nation, there's no nice way to put it. Happy T Day, Valerie
ReplyDeleteHe is such a disgrace that I wonder at the ones who continue to close their eyes to it. Not just average voters but our elected officials. :(
DeleteI won't bore you with my rant about Trump and what I think of him. I am not a Trump fan either. (And I'm not the only one in Europe that thinks so, Just read the stuff that is going round on FB in Europe)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you included the Guardian among your list. I read the Guardian online every morning and I trust them to give me authentic news. Their articles (commentators) are good too.
Enough about politics, I'll accept that cup of tea in that lovely mug, thank you.
Happy T-Day, (I won’t tell you to stay at home. As Iris says: we are not children and yes, we got the message.)
Hugs,
Lisca
Politics never bores me, and I think there's never enough of it lol I've been talking politics since the Kent State massacre and Watergate, but the internet does make it easier :) I went to the grocery today, first time in 3 weeks. It felt so strange to be shopping!
DeleteThat little excerpt gave me such a visual- well written and descriptions in it. Yes, everyone needs to have their say. I watch a very little bit of our local news and that's it though. I can also only take so much of the politics. But it is true that one shouldn't rely on only one source for information. Thanks for sharing, and happy T day!
ReplyDeleteShe's a wonderful writer. I found her early on :) I may be a politics addict ;)
DeleteI'd love a tea, thank you! We've been reading the regulations outlined from our government as everyone seems to put their own spin on things which is unhelpful 😀. Glad you've found some trustworthy sources of news! Happy T Tuesday wishes! Keep well! Hugs, Jo x
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to stay well, thanks!
DeleteI don't watch a lot of news because it is very depressing and I do think the news media is biased. I am a nurse and I am hearing from other nurses around the country that so many hospitals are having a high recovery rate from Covid-19. I am also hearing from them that many of their nurses are being forced to take furloughs because there is not enough patients. Yes, NY is the exception but obviously the population of NYC is the reason. Anyway, I don't like to talk much about politics but people are dying everyday from cancer, heart disease, flu, car accidents etc... Why are we suddenly so enraged when people don't want to wear a mask in public or give up the only way they have to feed their family? It seems to me like fear is the driving factor in this mess and governors are exploiting that fear by making nonsense orders.
ReplyDeleteOk. I'll get off my soapbox.
Your mugs are lovely especially the right one.
Happy Tea Day,
Kate
Almost all people recover from this, that's true. But the death rate is so much higher than what they're used to seeing from diseases like this. Here they are postponing all elective medical procedures, so medical personnel are getting furloughed for that reason. Seasonal flu has a much, much lower death rate than this new one, and there is a vaccine and treatments for that. The rate at which people end up in ICU on a ventilator with seasonal flu is much lower than with Covid-19. Cancer and heart disease aren't contagious. Car accidents are a whole 'nother issue, and I rant about that on FB with some regularity. You'd be welcome to see all the information I share over there on ways we could bring down the deaths from car accidents ;)
DeleteOur governor was slow off the mark and behind our larger cities and has already declared May 1 as the day he's opening things back up. The orders have been informed by public health concerns and with advice from medical professionals in the field, so I don't know how things are in your state but they weren't "nonsense orders" here. We're getting a kick out of noticing that the same people who were prepping for their bunker lifestyle and now complaining they can't get a professional haircut. It's so strange.
I addressed the claim that "the news media" is universally biased in my post, so I won't repeat it here.
I appreciate your willingness to speak out. If you'd like more discussion I'm always supportive of that :)
Beautiful mugs, I go for the Tea, happy T-day to you!
ReplyDeleteTea it is :)
DeleteSo, I left a comment, then realized Google didn't show me as logged in. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I like that author and I like your mugs.
I try to avoid listening to Trump.
I understand. I'm a junkie, though. I wanna see it for myself. The longer this goes on the harder he is to watch.
DeleteI want the DARK ROAST coffee, please. I would LOVE to try that coffee. It sounds wonderful, because I use French Roast every day (grind beans for each pot as I make it). I have my own mug, so you don't even have to wash one of your own when I leave.
ReplyDeleteYou do NOT want to get me started on this COVID-19 or Trump soapbox I am also on. Just check out my post tomorrow and you'll see why I am so mad at Trump. AND it has nothing to do with the virus, OR the reopening of the country, which is a farce as far as I'm concerned. BTW, one of my no-name friends is a Dr. and she no longer works on her own patients because she spends so much time treating COVID patients. Stay safe and well, dear friend.
Thanks for your wonderful views on this epidemic. I also love the Guardian. Thanks for the coffee, too for T this Tuesday.
That's our every morning covfefe ;) We drink Peet Italian Roast in the afternoons. I don't grind the beans, but my husband likes to do that :)
DeleteYes, I do, I do, I really do want to get you started lol I believe if we're not talking about it we're missing an opportunity to understand one another. I look forward to reading you tomorrow to see what you have to say about Trump. He's deserving of serious consideration in regards to a number of issues. How we elected him is a mystery #ButHerEmails!
Here's my theory of why Trump got elected. Both Trump and Hillary were disliked, but for different reasons. I think people were tired of the name Clinton, although she did get the majority of votes in the country. Both candidates had baggage and I think people just held their nose and voted for Trump thinking he couldn't do worse than Clinton. I remember when she almost got indited over Whitewater and how she acted each and every time Bill got caught with his pants down. I'm not sure how much better Hillary would have been as president, but she would NOT have gotten rid of half the cabinet and she would have given us better judges. You know: the kind that are appointed for LIFE. I can truthfully say I didn't vote for either. I voted Libertarian, so I couldn't be blamed no matter which one won.
DeleteThis year is VERY different. I've been a Biden fan since he decided to run for president. I know he wasn't your first choice, but he's always been mine.
I think I have denigrated Trump enough you know how I feel about him. He's a misogynist and liar. His strategy is to first deny, then attack. Next he tries to control the narrative. When that doesn't work, he plays the victim, then places blame elsewhere. You and I would be singing the same song. You would be preaching to the choir when you talk to me about this vile human who I believe has mental issues. Hope you like my post tomorrow. Trump is only a small part of the picture, but still . . . .
Forgot to mention, I almost wrote a comment to Kate about her skewed thinking. Car accidents-->COVID-19. COVID-19-->Car accidents. Not even in the same universe.
DeleteTrump got elected because the Electoral College favors rural conservative voters and has done so every single time the election has been decided by them. The Electoral College has elected the Republican over the Democratic popular vote winner ever since it's come to them as a choice between Republican and Democrat.
DeleteI was a #FeelTheBern supporter in 2016 and campaigned for Bernie locally. Once Hillary won and my choice was her or Trump? Well I'd rather not support dynastic politics, but #AnybodyButTrump was my view. I've never liked Biden and was disappointed when Obama chose him, but there ya go. We can't always get our druthers. How anybody can ever not vote against Trump is incomprehensible to me. I've known what Trump was for decades, and he's well-known locally for what he did here, and I wouldn't vote for him for dog-catcher as the saying goes. Now that he's been president for over 3 years I honestly don't get how he has supporters left :(
And yeah, car wrecks? I'd be happy to join forces with anybody concerned enough to do anything to improve the safety of our streets, but I always wanna ask people who bring up car wrecks what kind of vehicle they drive and whether or not they live in a city of any size and whether or not they've biked or walked as a means of transportation (and not recreation) in the past 5 years. And, as you say, it's a discussion irrelevant to the issue of trying to control a pandemic.
I'd love a discussion with Kate, but discussions with Trump supporters are never (well, very rarely) on offer. A single exchange is the best I ever get. They usually have their say, say they don't watch any news and don't like to discuss politics, and then they are closed to that subject. In the past I've been able to have civil -even cordial- discussions with conservatives, but trump supporters just seem to parrot his talking points. I miss talking "across the aisle".
I agree Trump is not the sole cause of the problem. I'd argue that Trump is the result of the road traveled by conservatives since Nixon. Through Reagan and the Tea Party... Republicans own this mess. They seem so proud :/
I will have a cup of tea with you and we can have a "b" session about Trump. I am not a fan of his either and I believe if he was truly a leader he would be trying to unite the country with this virus issue, not riling up people so they go out only to spread the virus more. And the medical system is already taxed. We could have been more prepared too. OK, that is my mini "b" session since I not have a cup of tea at the moment. Hope you had a good day. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteIt's always about him. I can't imagine why people support such a small, petty, cruel, vindictive man as he is :(
DeleteI like that author and enjoyed the story. I think the mug on the left is very pretty and the one on the right is funky. I follow the local news but hate politics.
ReplyDeleteHappy T-day! Eileen xx
The Kent State Massacre and the Vietnam War opened my eyes to politics, and I've paid attention ever since.
DeleteI think the mugs complement each other :)
I'd gladly join you for coffee! I probably would avoid discussing politics. I'm pretty sure all politicians are dishonest to a degree, if they weren't when they started, they get that way pretty quickly. and reporters assume that we aren't intelligent enough to understand and draw our own conclusions. You are right about news and commentators, but unbiased reporting seems difficult to come by these days. I actually rather like listening to the BBC news on the radio, though. Enjoy your beverage of choice, and have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI'd have to disagree with you about all politicians being dishonest as we have several around here who have excellent records for honesty. They don't all lose their integrity when they take office. The BBC is one of the ones I like, too :)
DeleteLove those mugs! The blue one is especially beautiful! As for Trump - I'm glad you've got him! I can't understand when so many folk recognise him as being particularly.....well.... there are several words I could use here - insert your own -he still seems to think he will be re-elected! Surely not! Belated Happy T day! Chrisx
ReplyDeleteHe could easily get re-elected. His fans remain completely faithful and devoted. I'm concerned for his mental health/dementia/whatever is wrong with him. It's a tragic state of affairs :(
