The Night Before Christmas (1913)

The Night Before Christmas (1913) is a Russian silent film by Ladislas Starevich. It's a fairly faithful adaptation of the story Christmas Eve by Nicolai Gogol. The film combines live action and stop motion animation.

  1. Wow, that packed a lot into 42 minutes. That demon was scary looking. I was almost repulsed by his looks and actions, although I'm sure the actor was nothing like the demon he portrayed. Thanks for the full length version and review.

    1. I get a kick out of the movies that I think I know the story of and that then turn out to be nothing like what I expected lol

  2. Made very little sense to me, to be honest. Was surprised by the amount of hitting and beatings...and what was the deal with all the men packed into burlap bags? I was a little lost most of the time.

    1. I read the story it was based on first, and I imagine that helped a lot. It's her visitors she hides in the sacks so they won't be seen by the next person at the door. Her house seems to be grand central station. I have no trouble re-imagining this as a Marx Brothers movie lol You can read a story summary here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Eve_(Gogol)
