Ride in the Whirlwind

Ride in the Whirlwind is a 1966 western starring Jack Nicholson, Millie Perkins, Cameron Mitchell, and Harry Dean Stanton. This is a traditional western with a solid plot and good acting -all in all a very nice film. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

via Youtube:

Slant Magazine says, "Ride in the Whirlwind is unquestionably a great movie, with its direct performances, gorgeous imagery, literate, densely jargoned dialogue, and inventively bifurcated duel-siege structure." Criterion calls it "moody and tense". DVD Talk compares it to The Shooting which was jointly released with it by Criterion and says, "their unique charms and timeless appeal still make these unconventional Westerns accessible almost half a century later."

Roger Ebert calls it a must-see. Rotten Tomatoes has a critics score of 100%.

  1. It reads like both you and the critics found this a really good movie. I really wish I liked westerns more than I do. Thanks for reviewing it, though.

  2. The YouTube link wasn't working on your post but I found it on youtube. Kind of sad. You hope at least Jack lived in the end. I also watched The Shooting because I found that, too, and I am a Jack Nicolson fan. Although, he plays the villain in The Shooting and I like him better as at least the rascal naughty guy--LOL! Both had kind of tragic unsatisfying endings. Interesting, but that probably gave me my fill of old westerns for a while--LOL!

    1. Thx for the heads-up about the link. I re-checked it and it still works for me, so I'm not sure how to fix it :( I did watch The Shooting a few years ago never having heard of it before. That was a wonderful take on "western"! I like Nicholson, too, and think he makes a great bad guy ;) I have grown to like the westerns that tend towards the various sub-genres. I like standard westerns, too, but I've been surprised by what all is out there that is off the standard genre concept. Westerns are more varied than I realized before looking into them.
