The NYT opens a positive review with this: "Alfred Hitchcock will be seventy-three on August 13, but like Luis Bunรผuel, whom he otherwise resembles but slightly, his talent is only enriched by the advancing years that make most directors fearful and insecure." The Guardian has a review that calls it "a complex and gripping thriller". Slant Magazine calls it "easily the strongest of the master’s final works".
Roger Ebert gives it 4 out of 4 stars and a glowing review. Rotten Tomatoes has a critics rating of 87%.
I've always been a big fan of Hitchcock, but really don't remember this one. It sounds good, and seems the critics like it, too. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteI never think of Hitchcock as being active into the 70s, and I had missed this one.
DeleteI don't remember this one, either. Might have to see if I can find it someplace. Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteRight now it's on Youtube at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwaSM8NAD7A but movies come and go.
DeleteI finally watched it (Sept 11) and it was pretty good once I got past the chauvinism. One forgets what it was like to live in that world. I remember how men could get away with treating and talking to women...and, sadly, what women put up with as normal. Really brought me back there in the first part, especially. The guy was such a jerk that he kind of deserved to be falsely arrested--LOL! Anyways, thought I would let you know I finally did watch it. :)
Deleteand this movie was made in 1972! It's hard to believe it was that bad then, but yes it was :(
DeleteQuite right, there is nothing more to say - Alfred Hitchcock is genius! Great film and thanks for sharing ๐. Wishing you a happy start to the week! J ๐
ReplyDeletep.s. Sorry I haven't been around to visit recently, we have family staying this week and I just haven't found the time. I hope you had a lovely weekend and I will try and visit when I can probably before bedtime or early morning if I can stay awake that long ...lol ๐. Happy September! J x
It's nice to have family around :) I've been having trouble with a privacy add-on I added to Chrome, and it confused blogger lol. I've deleted it now. It kept blogger from recognizing me, and I couldn't comment, even on my own blog.
