Langston Hughes' "Early Autumn"

"The leaves fell slowly from the trees in the Square. Fell without wind. Autumn dusk."

Early Autumn is a 1950 short story by Langston Hughes. It's a very short story and easily read quickly, but the effect is profound and can stay with you. You can read it online here. There's an exploration of the plot, structure, and characters here.

  1. I have read that story before. Poignant.

I thought I knew every painting van Gogh painted, but this one is new to me.

  2. New Van Gogh for me, too. I liked the story very much. Was a few minutes in those people's lives where so much was conveyed with so little said.

    1. It's like you know their history from that one short scene, isn't it :)

  3. I love langston hughes's poetry, but I didn't know he wrote any short stories. And the Van Gogh is a new one for me too! Love the autumn colors in it and that line of trees he painted are cool. Happy weekend. Hugs-Erika

    1. I came across this looking for short stories that take place in the fall. I hadn't realized he wrote short stories either.

    1. I'm thinking autumn thoughts, but the weather here is still sunny with highs in the 60s. I'm ready for the fall leaves like in the painting :)
