Fantasia (1940)

Fantasia is a 1940 animated Disney musical anthology film featuring various pieces of classical music. I've seen it several times, having had it on VHS when the kids were little. This time I watched it on Disney+. It was expensive to produce and was a box office failure. It's a must-see but doesn't in my opinion reward re-watching.

Film Site has an article and an extensive summary. Rotten Tomatoes has a critics consensus score of 95%. It's listed in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.

  1. I like Fantasia. My favorite piece is Beethoven's 6th with the centaurs and pegasuses. pegasusi?

  2. Oh, I love this one!
We have several videotapes we bought for use with grandies. We no longer have a player, though!

    1. That constant evolution of media... We had a lot of VHS tapes we can't use now.

  3. The perfect movie to have on for kids when the grown-ups want to talk or read while the kids watch! Gorgeous score, beautiful animation... but I wonder if today's romper stompers would find it active enough.

    1. I don't have any littles to test it on. It'd be interesting to see if it's held up.

  5. I agree with you--worth one run through but not something I was excited to see again. I did watch it twice--saw it a second time a couple decades later. Strictly a visual and audio experience with no real storyline. Closest thing to a storyline is Mickey and the mops.

    1. It would serve as an intro to that kind of music for folks who are visually oriented.

  6. I think it's a well done film, but I always found it a little slow to get through. But I do applaud anytime someone tries to push the boundaries.

    1. It was a new idea, and there are precious few of those out there.

  7. I remember seeing portions of it. Not sure I saw it all because I barely remember it (sad, but true).

    1. It's episodic, so I can understand how you could remember parts of it without remembering if you'd seen the whole thing.

  8. I remember this film well, my daughter loved it as a kid, and later on her boys loved it. Valerie

    1. It's a generational bit of fun when our kids enjoy something we did :)

  9. Count me as a fan! I saw it in a theater on one of its re-releases when I was quite young, and saw parts of it on the Disney Sunday Night program which my family watched. And I’ve seen it again as an adult.

    1. It's good that re-watching movies is an option. I'm glad the Disney ones are more readily available these days.

  10. Of late I have been questioning Disney's choice in film making ... I've inherited the task of rooting through a box of VHS tapes donated to the church, wonder what Disney classics I'll find :)
