In Fit the First from Lewis Carroll's book The Hunting of the Snark:
There was one who was famed for the number of things
He forgot when he entered the ship:
His umbrella, his watch, all his jewels and rings,
And the clothes he had bought for the trip.
He had forty-two boxes, all carefully packed,
With his name painted clearly on each:
But, since he omitted to mention the fact,
They were all left behind on the beach.
...I only know the author's name.
ReplyDeleteThis one's a treat.
DeleteSounds like an overpacker like me! Love this -- and the illustration.
ReplyDeleteAnd then to have none of it on the trip! Horrors! lol
DeleteWhat a delightful find!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't remembered it from my last read.

DeleteSuch a fun poem and a great way to find a 42. Lewis Carroll was a gem.
ReplyDeleteHe was, wasn't he! Always worth re-reading.
DeleteFun poem. But I wonder what will happen to the 42 boxes left on the beach.
ReplyDeleteSad abandoned baggage :(
DeleteThe Hunting of the Snark is a strange book, but I somehow liked it. Enjoy your weekend, Valerie
