The Snow Queen (1957)

The Snow Queen is a 1957 Soviet film adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story. You can read the story in English translation online here, here, and here.

The NYT has a review of the 1960 American theatrical release. Rotten Tomatoes has an audience score of 81%.

  3. Believe it or not, I have seen this film before. I was adviser to the Asian culture club that we used to have at school and one day we watched this. (Mainly because part of the Soviet Union was in Asia and the kids wanted something Siberian to watch.) I think the Soviet animation style is so different from ours that it took a bit getting used to, but it was also fascinating to get a glimpse into what people behind the Iron Curtain were watching when we were being told how horrible their lives were. OK, just to clarify, I am not a communist. Happy Saturday. Hugs-Erika

    1. It was a huge influence on Hayao Miyazaki, and he's released it with the original Russian soundtrack and Japanese subtitles. There's a big Asian connection :) You don't have to be communist to appreciate Soviet films. There's some wonderful things to see from them :)
