We keep society fiches as pets, and in the Spring, Summer, and Fall we keep them on the patio. We had thought all our finches were male, having lost our two females to death some years back, but we were wrong. Their first attempt to raise babies failed, I believe because we didn't realize we had a female so hadn't provided nesting material and the nest bottom had a big gap in it. Once we realized what was going on, we replaced the nest and put some nesting material in the cage. Now we have two babies, one of which has been in and out of the nest several times. They look just like their mother. Sweet things.
The patio is looking bedraggled, more like September than summertime. This is my lavender behind my woodpile:
You can see our new dogwood tree in the back left of that photo. The rue is to the left of the lavender. Here are some more photos:
And here's a visitor that came yesterday afternoon:
spam seems to appear here off and on-so far I have not had any for awhile now.
ReplyDeletehow fun with your finches-and nice they can be outdoors for a bit too
before we retired we had a business called About Birds-we had a small retail store, allot of wholesale accounts and two large aviaries-stores and breeders were drive to us from all over the country for our finches-and other birds we loved the Australian we even got awarded a first world breeding award-we really enjoyed the breeding the most-
I'd loved to have gone to see your aviaries! I've had several different kinds of finches through the years, but Societies are all we have now. I do love them, such fun to watch, but they are messy! At least it's a mess I can keep confined, since they're in a flight. These are the first babies we've let hatch is a long time.
Deletethe babies are always so fun we raised allot of larger birds and hand fed them all talk about messy one of our favorites were the nectar eating birds-they made a real mess for sure-I used to work very long hours back then my full time job plus did the feeding and the cleaning hubs handled the rest of the businss which was allot too plus hand fed the birds-we enjoyed it
DeleteThe largest bird I've had is a parakeet lol but the finches are special :) I've often thought of getting a couple of love birds, but every time we have a finch die we just get another finch. Hand-feeding large birds would be so much fun!
DeleteI was getting a lot of anonymous spam comments. I decided no more anonymous comments. How fun to watch the birds. I enjoy the bird traffic at the feeders. Sometimes it looks like an airport with planes circling the tower waiting to land. What a lovely garden.
ReplyDeleteThx! I do enjoy the birds and flowers :)
DeleteI already had it set not to allow anonymous comments, but I was getting massive numbers of spam comments from the same few spammer accounts. Reporting them as spam didn't help at all in decreasing the numbers of them that were published, and it was a pain to delete them even in bulk action batches.
I didn't know you kept finches. I bet seeing those babies is cool. Hope this batch makes it. And I still think your patio and garden looks fantastic. It looks like a super place to sit and read on a nice day. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
ReplyDeleteIt's a peaceful spot :) but I'm not as happy with my plant arrangement this year. I think I need fewer small pots of things.
DeleteI just checked my spam and found several questions people asked me that I never saw. Since I don't get an e-mail update when someone leaves a comment, I have to rely on looking back every once in awhile. But once I got rid of anonymous, I got no spam. Some people opt to moderate comments on posts that are over a certain number of days old.
ReplyDeleteI am in awe of your beautiful patio. Mine is shameful compared to yours. I love your lavender. Mine doesn't want to live more than a year and I fear it's too cold to leave it outside in winter. I really, really love your colorful pots. And the finch is adorable.
I'm getting spam by the bucket full from actual google accounts set up for that. It's annoying :( I'm sure google will eventually shut those accounts down, but there's been so much of it!
DeleteI spent years failing with lavender until I had this particular one recommended for our climate and soil. It's done well :) I'm trying to root cuttings so I can make a row of it along that side. Having the fence surrounding the patio makes it easier to plan plantings than having an open patio does. Daddy built us a brick patio when I was little, and Mother never tried to put plants on or right around it. She just made it part of the lawn landscape.
How very exciting to raise baby birds through to adulthood. We get the wild yellow finches along with house & red poll finches. I so enjoy their song. Your garden looks so peaceful, a perfect spot to sit, make lists, drink tea & daydream. Sorry to hear about your spam problem.
ReplyDeleteThe babies are sweet. It's less fun to get eggs if you have to discard them for lack of room :( I love our wild finches -we get purple or house finches (I have trouble identifying them).
DeleteHow lovely to have baby finches, so cute! Your patio is looking lovely 😁. I think Autumn/Fall will be early this year due to the heat we have been having as the trees are loosing leaves and flowering plants have already gone to seed. Happy weekend! J 😊 x
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame to get autumn so early if it means continued heat but fewer flowers :( It's been an odd summer!
