Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a 1954 musical film, a light-hearted romp on the subject of marriage by rape. Yes, this is a movie that hasn't aged well, not at all. I watched it on HBO Max. It's listed in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.
trailer:
Empire Online concludes by saying, "Great songs, great set pieces and solid performances in this colourful and infectiously enjoyable musical." Variety calls it "a happy, hand-clapping, foot-stomping country type of musical with all the slickness of a Broadway show." Rotten Tomatoes has a critics consensus score of 89%.

...it's a light-hearted romp on the subject of marriage by rape, really?
ReplyDeleteYes. Literally.
DeleteI don't like musicals. The only good thing about this movie is Russ Tamblyn dancing/jumping over the axe handle
ReplyDeleteThe choreography is fun to watch.
DeleteCrikey, I'd forgotten about that one!
ReplyDeleteI'll never forget that one lol
DeleteI was just talking about this film with a couple of friends the other day. I can't remember why it came up, but marriage by rape? Hmmm. I hope you had a great weekend Nita.
ReplyDeleteYes, marriage by rape. That's exactly what it is about. Literally based on the story of the rape of the Sabine women. They read/sing the story aloud during the movie.

from the Seven Brides Wikipedia entry: it is based on the short story "The Sobbin' Women", by Stephen Vincent Benét, which was based in turn on the ancient Roman legend of the Rape of the Sabine Women.
I saw this as a kid, and loved it, and can still sing a lot of the songs! Have a great week, take care, Valerie
ReplyDeleteI saw it on tv the first time, so I'd've been young, too.
