Henry V is a 1944 film adaptation of the Shakespeare play. It is directed by and stars Laurence Olivier. William Walton wrote the score. I'm a firm believer in watching -not reading- plays, so I look for them and watch them when I find them online. I found this one here.

TCM has an article. Rotten Tomatoes has a critics consensus rating of 100%.
You're the only person I know who never did any Shakespeare in school. We started studying his plays in 9th grade and did at least one every year as I recall.
Saw this years ago. I know it's sacrilegious to say if your were an English major but I confess that I have never been much of a Shakespeare fan. I have tried so many times to read and to watch but, sadly, it is always an effort and I get so bored.
I've always much preferred seeing rather than reading plays. There are re-tellings that are easier to read for modern readers. The stories themselves are interesting, but the language can be hard.
I would like this film I think. I am putting it on my list so that when they close school I can do some movie catching up. Happy end of your week. Hugs-Erika
Because this blog does not consist of a single focus topic I chose the name Divers and Sundry where "Divers" means being of many and various kinds, and "Sundry" means consisting of a haphazard assortment of different kinds.
Love this!
ReplyDeleteThose speeches! It's no wonder we learn Shakespeare speeches in school, is it! They can't be beat.
Delete...if I ever learned anything about Shakespeare, I retained little.
ReplyDeleteI still watch them when I come across them.
DeleteI did this play for my O level English Literature exam and we watched extracts of this film during our lessons.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoyed watching the plays much more than reading them.
DeleteOnce again, I never studied Shakespeare and know so little about his plays. I'm a troglodyte, I guess.

DeleteI love those films from 1944. School without Shakespeare - unthinkable! Valerie
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine English class without Shakespeare :)

ReplyDeleteIt's a winner :)
DeleteWhat could be better than Lawrence Olivier playing Shakespeare - perfect 😁. I hope you've had a great week! Hugs, Jo x
ReplyDelete's hard to beat!
DeleteI've been looking at all your movie posts here, but ah, Henry! Larry! A match made in heaven. Thank you for the reminder!
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks, too, for stopping by today!
Yes Olivier is masterful, isn't he! And a perfect match with Shakespeare. It's amazing how well the soliloquies have held up over time.
