In Winter

In Winter is a 2004 poem by Michael Ryan. You can read it here. It begins
At four o’clock it’s dark.
Today, looking out through dusk
...
Have it read to you here:

I don't like poetry except for novelty rhymes like limericks and Little Willy verses, and I've decided that this year I'll try to read a bit of poetry and see if I can develop a taste for it. We'll see. It's just never been something I enjoyed.

  1. Poetry isn't my cup of tea. I find this poem depressing especially images of darkness and regret.

    1. I just don't "get" poetry. I'm making a concerted effort this year, hoping to broaden my horizons.

  2. I like poetry, but I have to read it out loud. And get the rhythm right. I don't have patience for long poems though. Maybe I am too impatient for that,I don't know. Hope its a good weekend so far and you enjoy the rest of yours. Hugs-Erika

    1. I don't know how poetry fell out of favor with me. I grew up with it, of course, as did we all with those nursery rhymes and childhood poems.

The week-end is going well as I play with photo editing programs. Do I know how to have a good time or what ;)

  3. That was a sad wistful poem.
I tend to like poems that are more like prose, like this one. If I write any they are more like that--stories. But I can't say I gravitate toward poetry.

    1. I tend to avoid it. I'm determined, though, not to be one of those cranky old ladies who won't try anything new. I'll be a cranky old lady who tries some new things instead ;)

  4. I have added it to my ever longer-growing list- As I'm having a stay-home-to-get-well weekend I might make it a bit shorter! Valerie

    1. At least most poems are short affairs, I'll say that for them, I hope you are well by tomorrow!

  5. The world of poetry is vast and varied, so not all of poems appeal to me 😁. One of my favourite winter poems is The Darkling Thrush by Thomas Hardy (link below), I like the description and how it draws you into the winter scene as if you can see, hear and touch everything around you. I hope that you had a lovely weekend and wishing you a happy new week! J 😊 x

    1. Thank you! I've read and enjoyed some of Hardy's books, and I'm sure I was introduced to his poetry at some point. I am realizing I've forgotten all the poetry I studied in school except for some of the Shakespeare lol I appreciate the link. Going to read...

Beautiful! Yes, reading it was like being there. And I felt like I could hear that birdsong. Thanks again :)

  6. I never got into poetry much, but I loved The Charge of the Light Brigade. Not sure why, either. I'll try to get back to this one, but I know I'll be back for the political thriller.
