Happy Evolution Day!

Evolution Day observes the date of the original publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1859. The book can be read online here or here or here. Some people continue to misunderstand the theory, but there are explanations online that make it easy to understand even for folks like me for whom science is not a first language. LiveScience.com has some information, How Stuff Works has some basics, and Wikipedia has an entry.

This is a history of the theory:

This is a Nova documentary:

I haven't seen the videos yet, but I plan to watch them later in observance of the day.

  1. Try talking to a non-believer (someone who believes the earth is only 2500 or so years old) and you are out of luck. I'm so glad you highlighted these and also Evolution Day. Hopefully, science and reason will prevail in the end. Thank you so much for this (because science, math, and physics ARE my first language!).

    1. I wish the Biblical Literalists could be approached on this subject, but I've had no luck on that front. Their insistence that their interpretation of the Bible isn't an interpretation at all is a road block that I've never been able to get past.

  2. This would be something Himself would be interested in. I'll have to show him.

  3. I should know this day and I don't! I actually show that top film to my classes. And I have read the origin of species once many moons ago. Thanks for filling me in! Happy Saturday. Hugs-Erika

    1. I'm glad I picked something that's worth watching. It's always a risk when you haven't actually seen what you're posting ;)

  4. Happy Evolution Day to you too. Although there's some I've met or some I only hear about, that I think have skipped most if not all evolutionary steps! I'll say no more...

    1. lol! I've known people who believed that there was no rain at all before the Flood, that there was harmony and vegetarianism among all the people and animals (including dinosaurs) with moisture coming from a mist of some sort, and that the first rainbow followed the first rain which was caused when God opened physical windows in the heavens that waters poured through to cause a global flood. Because that's what The Bible Says. It's an interesting view.

  5. Great idea to celebrate Darwin, will try to watch the film later. Some people don't seem to have evolved far enough! Have a great day, Valerie

  6. Looks interesting! We live very near to the village where Darwin lived, and his house there is now a wonderful museum, that I have visited.

  7. I watched the first one but the second one will have to wait. Three hours is a bit long, but I bet it is interesting. There's usually some new information in longer shows.
