Feast of the Holy Innocents

Peter Paul Rubens, Massacre of the Innocents

The Feast of the Holy Innocents is the Christian observance of Herod the Great, king of Judea, ordering the execution of all male children two years old and under in the vicinity of Bethlehem in his attempt to kill the infant Jesus. Told in the book of Matthew, chapter 2:
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men.

17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,

18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not. -Matthew 2:16-18 (King James Version)
The Christmas story ain't all sweetness and light, folks. Let's give some thought to those who suffer in these days as we go about our holiday activities. We can enjoy our celebrations while still considering the darker aspects of our history.

  1. Your tea setting is lovely - I like the silver holder for the cup. I thought I was the only one observing The Feast of The Innocents. There are many dark stories in the bible ... my ladies bible study group studied Samuel 1 last year ... brutal tales from that book.

  3. There is a great deal of darkness in the bible and in our world today. However, I'm hoping the spirit we have been feeling this past week will carry over into 2022.

I love the cup holder and cup of coffee you shared with us for T this Tuesday. I take it that is sugar in the other container. I also like the holly table cloth with the cut out areas. It is gorgeous.

  6. Indeed, terror is often associated with Religion, and that's a no go! Your pretty cup and sugar bowl is delightful. Happy New Year, take care, Valerie

  9. Beautiful tea set, There is darkness all around us always and through history's past as well-but I look for and rejoice in the goodness and the kindness around us as well. Our world will be a better place if we would all share kindness amongst one another.
I love your idea for a French Press cozy-that would be perfect
    Happy T

  11. What a lovely coffee set Nita. And you are right about the story not being all sweet and wonderful. And people in need. Even people who don't seem to be in need. And at the risk of being too happy- Have a great T day too.

  13. I agree with 'CJ's' comment, "Lots of our history is dark and ugly, but we must learn about it, face the truth, and become and do better."

That is a most beautiful tea cup and table setting.

    All the best Jan

  15. The tea service is beautiful - Wow.

We are so flawed as a species, and without God's help we just go into the worst directions ever. The lust for power, greed, selfishness, and indifference are ugly and cruel. There are so many people suffering in the world - all over AND in our own backyards. Thanks for reminding us. Happy New Year and Happy T-day (a bit late but heartfelt).

  16. Yes, the Bible is full of cruel stories. (Especially the Old Testament) but people were a lot more barbaric in those days.
I love your silver cup. It looks like very middle eastern. I remember drinking coffee in the middle east and I had to remember to put the sugar in first, then to stir and then wait until the coffee had sunken to the bottom of the cup, then drink it and remember not to drink all of it or I'd end up with a mouthful of coffee dregs.
    Happy (belated) T-Day,
    Lisca
