Blood from a Stone is the 14th book in the Commissario Guido Brunetti mystery series by Donna Leon. It takes place during the Christmas holiday season. I enjoy this series, her writing, the characters, the plots... They do not need to be read in order.
from the back of the book:
On a cold night shortly before Christmas, a Senegalese street vendor is killed in Venice's Campo Santo Stefano. The nearesr witnesses to the death re the tourists who have been browsing the man's wares -fake handbags of every designer label- but they have seen nothing that might be of help to the police. When Commissario Guido Brunetti arrives on the scene, he finds it hard to understand why anyone would murder an illegal immigrant. They have few social connections and little money, so infighting among them seems the obvious answer. But once Brunetti begins investigating this unfamilar underworld, he discovers that matters of grear value are at stake in the community.Kirkus Reviews calls it "Leon’s most adroit balance of teasing mystery...". Italian Mysteries concludes its review with this: "This book is a must read. Donna Leon is such a marvelous writer."
I have enjoyed a few of these books - so again thanks for that introduction. Seems Mr Brunetti is quite popular, there's once again a waiting list at the library.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear libraries have them :)

ReplyDeleteDefinitely!
DeleteI love the Inspector Brunetti series, though I can't remember every one of them or every plot line. I'm pretty sure that I've read that one, though. I love the food descriptions -- I even have a Donna Leon cookbook.
ReplyDeletebest... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
I think they'll be re-readable, so I'm keeping them. I need to look at the cookbook. The food descriptions are wonderful, aren't they!

DeleteI love all the Donna Leon books and films! Valerie
ReplyDeleteI can't access the films, but someday I hope I'll find them available here.
DeleteI've read a couple of these and I really like them too. I'll have to look for this one next year when it's the holiday season. It would be interesting to see how they celebrate Christmas in Venice. Happy Christmas week!
ReplyDeleteHappy Christmas week!
DeleteNever knew this. Sounds... scary. And interesting. Job-wise I´m in South Africa, not the same but...
ReplyDeleteInternational crime is scary. Bruneti works it all out for good in the end :)
DeleteEvery time you share one of these books, I go to my library list which is now online. It appears they now have a few of these Bruneti mysteries. I may see if I can pick up one or more after the holidays because you always make them sound so intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI like everything about them. I hope you enjoy them, too :)
DeleteI just gave my friend this for Christmas -- she'll give them to me when she finishes!
