Kino, by Haruki Murakami

Kino is a short story by Haruki Murakami. You can read it at the New Yorker. It begins,
The man always sat in the same seat, the stool farthest down the counter. When it wasn’t occupied, that is, but it was nearly always free. The bar was seldom crowded, and that particular seat was the most inconspicuous and the least comfortable. A staircase in the back made the ceiling slanted and low, so it was hard to stand up there without bumping your head. The man was tall, yet, for some reason, preferred that cramped, narrow spot.

Kino remembered the first time the man had come to his bar. His appearance had immediately caught Kino’s eye ...
Because the story takes place in a bar, where I hope you'll join me for a beverage as we visit, I'm linking to Bleubeard and Elizabeth's weekly T Stands for Tuesday blogger gathering.

Kino listens to jazz LPs in his bar, and specifically mentioned is Art Tatum:

Also mentioned is the Coleman Hawkins version of Joshus Fit The Battle Of Jericho with Major Holley on bass:

and Billie Holiday's Georgia on my Mind:

Erroll Garner's Moonglow:

and Buddy DeFranco's I Can't Get Started:

ATCs

I seem to have gotten a defective glue stick. It's a name brand I've never had trouble with, but with this one I can't make even light-weight paper stick and I can't get a smooth surface. I'm going to throw it away and use another that came in the same multi-pack. We'll see.

This one was inspired by the prompt Shoes:

And this one by the prompt Animals:

Bird:

Tree:

Lucky:

Spring:

And random, not from a prompt:

  4. Great story and I enjoyed the music too 😁. Your ATCs, as always are amazing, thanks for the inspiration! I love how you interpreted the themes and the cheery spring designs caught my eye, as well as the "notice, observe and attend" and also the "uncommon" ones - fabulous! Wishing you a Happy T Tuesday! 7. I was just on my way to link you when I refreshed and saw you had already posted. I guess you can tell I'm back and will play catch-up as best I can. This has been a very trying time being without internet, but I HOPE this has been the cure. I'll explain on Wednesday, because it's too convoluted to explain here. Thanks for visiting while I was offline. It means the world to me. I'm so, so thankful for you, dear friend.

It took awhile to listen to all these, most of which I had never heard before. VERY interesting. Definitely outside the box thinking for T this Tuesday.

I have been having problems with some of my glue sticks lately, too. I have four different brands open at the moment and I'm having problems with two of them. I found on one, the glue was dried even before I removed it from the package. I removed about 1/2 inch of glue stick and got down to softer and more sticky glue. Although I hate to waste anything, it's better to lose a part of the glue stick than all of it. I think the product was old when I bought it, but that shouldn't have been the case with the other one I'm having problems with.

A couple of years ago, I picked up Crayola glue stick on clearance (at Menard's) after school had started. I swear it's the best glue stick I've ever bought. Even better than UHU, for whom I used to design. It came in a two pack and I'm now using it sparingly when I need a glue stick that has true staying power!

I'm really loving the ATCs you are making and look forward to seeing them each Tuesday, too.

  9. Gluesticks are sometimes a bit tricky -lol! I make my own home glue paste meanwhile and put it on the papers with an old brush since there is such a little amount of glue in commercial Glue sticks.. they are expensive and there is plastic left ...
there are many different recipes online meanwhile -
I have to store it in the fridge - otherwise it gets moldy over time, but I love it!
The plant at my table is
    Osteospermum
    you are right!
They are known as daisybushes or African daisies.

    Happy T-Day

  13. That sounds like an interesting story. I will read it as soon as my internet picks up. It is less than 1 Mb at the mo, so stuff takes ages to download.
I don't use glue sticks. In this hot climate they dry out so quickly, it's not worth buying them. I use an E-Z runner.
    Happy T-Day,
    Lisca

  14. Your ATCs are terrific! I really enjoy seeing them at T, D. "Animals wild" is really cool.

I've gotten bad packs of glue sticks from big box stores a couple of times. Usually when the 1st one is bad, the rest are too. I think they've been in a warehouse too long. I check the rest of the pack ASAP and just toss them as I go. Sometimes about 20% are okay.
