Tai Chi

I've been interested in Tai Chi for years. I've bought DVDs and tried Youtube videos and looked at diagrams, but none of them have worked for me. Here's what Tai Chi looks like if you know what you're doing:

I've recently discovered that a local senior center offers Tai Chi classes 3 days a week. I've signed up and begun attending. They offer a lot more there (art, dancing, yoga...), and I'll probably look into some of the other classes. The building is adjacent to a park with a walking track, and I took these photos last week:

I'm finding the Tai Chi class interesting. The women in the class are friendly and talkative, and the teacher shows concern that we enjoy and understand the process. I'm hoping to learn the forms well enough so that I can practice at home using a DVD.

  1. This will be a wonderful addition to your artistic endeavors, dear. And to think there's also a walking trail nearby. It's almost like this was made with you in mind.

  2. I took a tai chi class in the early 90´s, during my second year at university (first time around). We had a lot of Chinese guest scientists at the time and one was a tai chi master who was more than willing to teach. He spoke little English and no Swedish, so it was really just watch and do. I never got into it, even after six months I found the movements unnatural and the music strange. Perhaps I would like it better today. I´d sign up for tap dancing, though, but I never lived anywhere where they were given! ;-)

    1. I was always "into" that late-60s "Eastern" vibe, and have done yoga off and on since then. I hope the Tai Chi sticks with me as I've heard it's doable even for very elderly folks. I took tap and ballet as a child as was common around here. There are several places here that teach both as exercise for adults. Might be fun. :)

  3. My neurologist suggested Tai Chi classes for my balance problem. I've been looking for a local class but haven't found quite the right fit yet. You encourage me though

    1. This is so close to me I'm not even looking elsewhere. I've heard there are other classes around, though. Some of the martial arts studios teach it, and I've heard it may be offered at some churches and the YMCA. There are a couple of museums that offer weekly yoga classes and -I think- Tai Chi. I hope you find something you like :)
