a 1932 song by Irving Berlin, performed in this video by The Glenn Miller Orchestra. Glen Miller was missing in action on this date in 1944. Wikipedia says,
On December 15, 1944, Miller was to fly from the United Kingdom to Paris, France, to play for the soldiers there. His plane, a single-engined UC-64 Norseman, USAAF serial 44-70285, departed from RAF Twinwood Farm in Clapham, on the outskirts of Bedford and disappeared while flying over the English Channel. There were two others on board the plane: Lt. Col. Norman Baessell and pilot John Morgan.Lyrics excerpt:
A 2014 article in the Chicago Tribune reported that, despite many theories that had been proposed, Miller's plane crashed because it had a faulty carburetor. The plane's engine had a type of carburetor that was known to be defective in cold weather and had a history of causing crashes in other aircraft by icing up.

The Glenn Miller band was on of my Dad's favorites. I grew up listening to some of his records.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed listening to Glenn Miller. So tragic that he had to die young (like so many of course).The Glen Miller band was one of my dad's favorites and we played it a lot in our house. I still have some of his most famous tracks on my iPod.

Thanks for sharing. I didn't know about Glenn Miller dying in a plane crash. I have seen he and his orchestra in different movies of the 30's-40's though. Happy T day!

Unlike others here, I was NOT a fan of any of the big bands, although I remember hearing my grandparents playing them on the radio (since my grandparents didn't allow a tv in their home until after I graduated from high school. I do remember that song, though. I think it was on a tv commercial about Maxwell House or Folgers a few years back.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the song the way Glen Miller's band played it and am humming it as I type. I must be getting less rigid in my choice of music these days (grin). So glad you honored him on the date of his disappearance.

We have a Glenn Miller orchestra in Sweden, licenced by Glenn Miller Productions, led by long-time enthusiast Jan Slottenäs (I read somewhere he has been obsessed with Miller all his life and have led his orchestra since he was 17). We have heard them several times and they are eerily like the real thing. Happy T-Day!

ReplyDeleteI forgot that he disappeared like that on a plane trip across The Channel. Whenever I hear big band music it reminds me of watching all the old black and white musicals. :) They used to run black and white movies (Minneapolis) in the afternoons (with Mel Jazz) and late in the evenings, too, after the news. Loved them. I would stay up late to watch them when I was a kid. I remember this song, but I don't know from where.

ReplyDeleteSo many of us grew up with that music in our homes, so your post really was a walk down memory lane. I still love the old "swing" music, and did keep some of my Mom's CDs. (cause the vinyl records were well worn out...LOL)
