Joni wasn't a favorite of mine ever but kind of shocking for her to sing disrespectful comments about another musician! Even if the guy was an a$$hole--why be publicly abusive? I couldn't even listen to all of it.
I have a different view on this. I think it is her commentary on how sad and unfair things were. The early blues artists were often not compensated when their work was covered by other artist. For example, I think Willie Dixon successfully sued the Rolling Stones when they covered one of his songs and wasn't compensated. "...While our limo is shining on his shanty street" is a powerful image of just how crazy and unfair things were. On another note... wow, what a band!! Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, and Wayne Shorter in your backup band!! I'm a huge fan.
Because this blog does not consist of a single focus topic I chose the name Divers and Sundry where "Divers" means being of many and various kinds, and "Sundry" means consisting of a haphazard assortment of different kinds.
I love Joni Mitchell. I can see why he wasn't thrilled, but I wonder how much artistic license she took when writing this song. Happy Wednesday. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's not that it isn't true, but
Delete"Furry sings the blues
Fallin' to hard luck
And time and other thieves
While our limo is shining on his shanty street.
Old Furry sings the blues."
Really? "our limo is shining on his shanty street"? That's cold-blooded.
...I never warmed up to Joni.
ReplyDeleteI like her, but this wasn't such a great way to treat a blues singer still living.
DeleteReally sad that someone had to be disrespected like that.
ReplyDeleteI think it was thoughtless at best.
DeleteNot really my music. Have a great day, Valerie
ReplyDeleteI'm a Memphis girl, and blues is in my blood :)
DeleteI was never a fan of Joni either.
ReplyDeleteI find it an odd choice, to sing about him like that.

ReplyDeleteHe wasn't even an asshole :( I don't know why she chose him.

ReplyDeleteFurry didn't look at it that way, and I'm inclined towards sympathy with how he took it. However she meant it, it was offensive to him.
DeleteBut yes, great sound!
