Coriolanus (2011)

Coriolanus is a 2011 film based on the Shakespeare play. Directed by Ralph Fiennes, it stars Fiennes, Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave, and Brian Cox. You can read the play from a link in one of my previous posts. You can watch this one at Tubi at this link and at Amazon Prime with ads through Imdb.

trailer:

The Guardian calls it "a vivid, intelligent Coriolanus with powerful political relevance" and "magnificently filmed" and says, "At once visceral and intelligent, this beautifully acted, vividly staged film brings a powerful, challenging honesty to bear on class, political life and the demands we make on our leaders." IndieWire says, "it also has the hallmarks of an assured film from an actor who nonetheless clearly demonstrates he knows that it takes more than just the art of acting to create a work of cinematic art."

Empire Online concludes a positive review with this: "Exciting, ironic, with assured direction, accomplished performances and the tension of topical themes, this is Shakespeare as relevant as you like it." Roger Ebert admires it and says, "One of the pleasures of Fiennes' film is that the screenplay by John Logan ... makes room for as much of Shakespeare's language as possible." Rotten Tomatoes has a critics consensus score of 92%.

  1. Ooooh! And Ralph Fiennes is so good (except for Harry Potter as I'm not a Harry Potter fan)

    1. The movies make sense if you've read the books. It's a real failing in the movies.

    3. The Young One and I both tried reading the Harry Potter books, but we just couldn't get into the story. I preferred Lord of the Rings and sadly because of forced book reports, the Young One didn't enjoy reading.

    4. I had my oldest pre-read HP for my younger ones when the first book came out and there was all the controversy. He wasn't a fan, but the younger ones and my husband liked them. I read them just to keep up, and they were fun enough. The Lord of the Rings is wonderful! I first read those in the mid-70s and re-read them every once in a while.

    1. Some of the movies are quite watchable. I much prefer watching plays to reading them.

  4. In graduate school I did a huge research project on Coriolanus, but now I can't remember a thing about the paper or even about the play. I really should watch that movie!

    1. I have never read it, but I enjoyed this film. It's odd not knowing how much of the story they leave out in the adaptations.

  5. I need to check this out. I remember reading this play in colleges and Ralph Fiennes is just one of the good actors, and one I enjoy watching.

  7. What a cast. I haven't read Coriolanus since college. And I love Ralph Fiennes (have you seen "The Dig" on Netflix? It's lovely.)
