Sweeney Todd (2006)

Sweeney Todd is a 2006 drama starring Ray Winstone, Essie Davis, David Warner, and Tom Hardy. It is based on the Penny Dreadful villain in the 1800s. This is not the Tim Burton/Johnny Depp version. This version is not lighthearted or a musical but is quite sad and a tragic story. I watched it on Amazon Prime.

  1. I can't remember if I saw a theater production of Sweeney Todd. I have seen the Burton/Depp version. Not really my cuppa

    1. No, the Depp version isn't my cuppa either. I liked him better in his pre-Pirates aspect. This one is different.

  4. I think this could be called almost horror. Even the musical doesn't really lighten up the story too much.

    1. Yes, I agree this is a type of horror. And a tragic tale imo.

  5. I watched for about five minutes, but found it too depressing for me. Thanks for sharing it, though.

    1. Not a cheerful story, that's certain.

  6. Oh, I have seen this version, too. Very dark, more psychological, and gruesome. Would not want to watch again.

    1. Yes, not the light-hearted musical romp people might've expected.

  7. I loved the Broadway musical -- such a powerful score, but not the Burton film so much. This very different version looks quite intriguing to me. What a fabulous cast. I haven't seen Essie Davis in anything since the Miss Fisher Mysteries -- I'd love to see her in this one.

    1. It's nice to see her in something else :) Sweeney Todd has had several adaptations.
