A Study in Scarlet (1933)

In observance of Sherlock Holmes Day I watched A Study in Scarlet, a 1933 film starring Reginald Owen as Sherlock Holmes. Anna May Wong also stars, though she doesn't get much screen time. Owen was one of only five actors to play both Holmes and Watson. It is based on Arthur Conan Doyle's novel of the same name. This book is Holmes' first appearance.

    1. It's observed on the anniversary of Arthur Conan Doyle's birth. A fun day to read one of the stories or maybe find a new-to-me adaptation :)

  8. I had NO idea there was a Sherlock Holmes Day. What a great find. I just hope to have time to see it, since I'm so far behind visiting. Right now, I hurt so badly, I can barely sit. And even my blisters have blisters!

  9. I had no idea there was a Sherlock Holmes day. Why not! Seems like there is an official day for almost everything. I actually watched this one, too, today (along with Wicked Woman). Wasn't bad for the first version of his books. (I think you said this was the first movie made, right?) My favorite of the old one was Basil Rathbone but my favorite of the new ones is Benedict Cumberbatch, of course. :)

    1. The book by this name is the first of the Holmes series. The films had an early start, with the first Sherlock Holmes movie coming in 1900.

My favorite Holmes is Jeremy Brett. His is much truer to the original stories both in character and plots. I'm not a Cumberbatch fan, but he has so many fans he doesn't need me ;)
