Taking Down the Tree is a poem by Jane Kenyon. You can read it here. It begins
"Give me some light!" cries Hamlet'sWe leave our tree up through the 12 Days of Christmas, so most people have all but forgotten about Christmas by the time we have our un-trimming of the tree.
uncle midway through the murder
of Gonzago. "Light! Light!" cry scattering
courtesans. Here, as in Denmark,
it's dark at four, and even the moon
shines with only half a heart.
The ornaments go down into the box:

...ours is down and I hate to see it gone.
ReplyDeleteIt does leave things lookin' bare :(
DeleteI sometimes leave the tree up until 3 Kings Day. Sometimes not. I have been known the leave the wreath on the front door until St. Patrick's Day 😺
ReplyDeleteI know people who leave everything up 'til Candlemas/Feast of the Presentation, but I've never left them up that long.
DeleteThat's a lovely poem! Your tree looks beautiful and we do the same leaving our tree up until 12th night 😀. Happy weekend! Hugs, Jo x
ReplyDeleteI love that Christmas decorations can last :)
DeleteThat's a fun poem! I just have 4 small ornaments so don't need much time to put my stuff away! Valerie
ReplyDeleteThere's something to be said for the less-is-more approach :)
DeleteI didn't have any decorations out this year (because of illness) so that's one job I don't have to do! Our family tradition is to decorate on Christmas Eve and leave all the decorations up until January 5th (Twelfth Night), although my sister used to keep hers up for an extra couple of days when her children were small as one of them had a birthday on January 7th.
ReplyDeleteWe use an artificial tree so can leave it up longer than when I was young.
DeleteLove your tree and ornaments
ReplyDeleteThank you :)
DeleteJane was a New Hampshire lady ( but not a native, but neither am I) and celebrated here. I love the photos of your tree. You look as though you have some great vintage ornaments similar to some we have too. I still have one smaller artificial tree up, which will stay up a few more weeks until the light changes a bit more. It is nice to have the extra holiday cheer too. Happy weekend. Hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI have some from my maternal grandmother's tree and some from Mother's and some from when I was growing up. We like the variety :) I know people who leave their tree up 'til Feb. 2 every year. That's a nice tradition, too :)
DeleteNo decorations for me, but I do have twinkling lights around my patio door and studio window all year round. ;)
ReplyDeleteI meant to put lights up around my patio door like you do but forgot. Next year! :)
