This sculpture is Spit Cake:
created in 2015 of hand-cut bone china by Elizabeth Alexander, as it appeared in the Dixon Gallery when I saw it. Here's a closer shot:
where you can see the cup used as part of this. I think I'd rather drink out of the cup than use it in sculpture, but then I'm not an artist.
I had never heard of "spit cake" before, but it is an actual kind of cake. The Wikipedia article was quite helpful.
I've been away from the blogging world for a bit, leaving the blog on auto-pilot, but I'm happy to be back in time to actively participate in T is for Tuesday, a weekly event where we share our beverage of choice and anything else we like. Please join us at Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog, where a warm welcome waits for you.

I've never heard of spit cake either, but it's a pretty sculpture. Thanks for sharing! Happy T Day, hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteVery interesting sculpture. I had never heard of spit cake. Happy T day
ReplyDeleteSpit cake - how funny, D. You can imagine what I was thinking before I read the Wikipedia article - lol.
ReplyDeleteHappy T-Day! Hugs, Eileen
Such an intricate design and it looks so elegant being built out of the white china 😀. Although it doesn't look like the spit cake called TrdelnÃk that I'm use to eating when we visit Prague. It's my hubby's favourite and it's baked over charcoal on a "spit", you can buy it from the Christmas Markets and they serve it dipped in cinnamon sugar - delicious! Thanks for the happy memories and wishing you a Happy T Tuesday! J 😊
ReplyDeleteThx for sharing that memory :) Your description makes me want to try it. I've never seen it offered here, but we do have bakeries so I'll keep an eye open. Maybe they call it something else.
DeleteWhat a name for a cake! Beautiful sculpture. Thanks for sharing the link about spit cake-never heard of it before. Thanks also for your thoughts on my blog post regarding the zoos. Happy T day!
ReplyDeleteLearn something new every day. Never heard of spitcake. The sculpture looks very interesting. I wonder if it was a way to use broken pieces of china?
ReplyDeleteHi I have not heard of a split cake cake-need to check into that-Happy T Day
ReplyDeleteKathy
Its a wonderful sculpture, but too many holes in the teacup to be of any use to us for our coffees and teas.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of a spit cake either. You have us all curious to know more.
Happy T day
Yvonne xx
How interesting! I had not heard of spit cake and of course I had to look at the Wikipedia article. Thanks for the link. The sculpture is curious and unusual, but that's art for you.
ReplyDeleteHappy T-Day,
Hugs,
Lisca
I'm glad your back, and that you introduced me to a term I had never heard of either. Spit cake. I wonder what they taste like? I would love to try one. :) Happy T day.
ReplyDeleteThis does look spectacular! Thanks for your tip - the doc showed me the Brandt Doroff technique and so far this seems to be helping(he said we could try something else if it doesn't work) Teacakes are delicious - a bread bun with dried fruit in the mixture, baked , cooled and then toasted! Happy T Day Chrisx
ReplyDeleteI was SO glad you shared the external link because before that, I thought it meant you spit saliva at the layers to see which one you hit (I have a very warped brain, I know). This is a real beauty and is truly reminiscent of a tea cup and saucer. Thanks for sharing this with us for T this Tuesday. Glad to see you back, too.
ReplyDeleteI just went back and read the comment you left about the James Patterson "Women's Murder Club." It was a series of books, not just one. I think they even made tv shows from it, but I never saw them. I suspect I could find them on Wikipedia.
ReplyDeleteFound both the tv shows and the books: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women%27s_Murder_Club
ReplyDeleteThx! I will definitely check these out. Patterson is a popular author so I'd guess I'll be able to find them locally. I look forward to these :)
