The Devil's Daughter

The Devil's Daughter is a 1939 zombie horror film (or a romantic comedy/drama, depending on which site you believe), which takes place on a Jamaican banana plantation. It's under an hour long.

Black Horror Movies has screen shots and says, "The Devil’s Daughter is an all-black melodramatic semi-remake of Ouanga with no devil and with daughters so bland the devil wouldn’t want ’em anyway."

About the Interstate 40 Mississippi River "M" bridge closure...

A new photo has surfaced showing that same crack being there back in 2016. Makes me wonder exactly what those inspectors are doing out there.

There's some concern about whether or not the old 1949 bridge that carries Interstate 55 across the Mississippi River here in Memphis can hold up under all the increased traffic. Inspections are being made. Let's hope these inspections are more thorough than the ones that missed the current problem for at least 5 years, right? The next closest crossings would be 100 miles to the north at Dyersburg, TN, and 60 miles to the south between Helena, AR, and Lula, MS.

Here's a map from Google:

There's an interesting piece here that explains how the unusual design of the bridge contributes to the risk:
This bridge's structural system is defined as an arched truss bridge with a deck suspended from the truss. This system is not the ideal system for a bridge that long. For this type of bridge, it's far preferable that the truss extend below the deck of the bridge at the pier (the upright structure that goes into the river to hold the bridge up) to provide better force distribution.

But because of this bridge's unique "M" shape, the entire truss (the arch of the "M") is above the deck and the pier is in direct contact with the bridge deck (which holds the highway). Because the arched "M" shape also requires the cables connecting the truss to the bridge to be shorter in places, this imposes high stress concentrations at the beams near the pier, specifically where this fracture was located.

  1. I wonder what will happen if the old bridge can't hold the traffic? I don't engineering wise what where will they route people next? Some of those bridges seem quite a ways off for people who need to commute. And some people don't want to pass the infrastructure bill because it isn't just roads and bridges. Let's see, part of the country was hard hit from the gas hacking and there are bridge issues...hmmmm. Have a great Thursday.

    1. The old bridge has been determined to be fine for this, so that's good. We need a ferry, and I'd love some enterprising soul to look into that as a business opportunity :)

  4. I guess the zombie theme has been around about as long as film! That crack in the bridge is scary. It appears the entire bridge could fail if the crack turns into a complete break.

    1. There's concern that repairing this would place undue stress on other sections, so there's a lot going into the process. The fear of a bridge failure is why they closed the bridge to all traffic rather than just closing all but a single lane each way.

  5. Oh, for a minute I thought this was a Richard 😻 Widmark movie, but 1939 was too early for him. The title I was thinking of "To The Devil A Daughter" Most of our roads were not designed for the amount of traffic we have now.

    1. Yes, the trucks especially have grown in length and weight.

  6. Are any engineers commenting on the photo? I work with steel and sometimes defects like the one shown don't effect the strength of the steel. It's kind of hard to see from that view how deep the crack is.

    1. Yes, it's very hard to tell anything from just looking at the crack from these photos, and the engineers are saying as much. There are in-person physical examinations and testing going on. It was the most recent inspection crew that called 911 to get traffic off the bridge and get engineers out there.

    2. Hopefully they can come up with a remedy to fix the bridge quickly and effectively.

    3. I do have faith they'll figure it out. I hope this causes inspectors to take their jobs more seriously. Our lives do depend on them.

  7. That bridge story is scary. I think I have been on BOTH these bridges, now that I have seen them. That crack is scary, especially because it is in the center and not near any trusses. Thanks for keeping us updated on that because we don't get news of the bridge here.

    1. The repair process has begun but no projections on a re-opening. Some folks are saying we need a 3rd bridge for traffic, but no one expects anything to come of that.

    1. I'm glad you liked it. I'm always happy when a movie is under an hour and still worth watching :) And Ouanga is fun, too.

    1. Definitely! They're working on a temporary repair to stabilize everything so they can work on a permanent fix. It's gonna take a while.
