Sherlock Holmes Baffled

In observance of Sherlock Holmes Day I watched Sherlock Holmes Baffled, a 1900 short, silent film. This is the first film adaptation of Holmes.

  1. That one is really old. I knew films were around then, but I didn't know they made commercial ones then. Is commercial film the right word I want? Not sure. Going to go check this out. Happy Saturday!

    1. I think the earliest publicly screened film was in 1892. Film has a much earlier history than I'd realized before I started looking into the history of horror films and found some fascinating shorts with wonderful special effects from the 1890s. It's amazing what they could do in those early days.

  6. I would never have guessed it was Sherlock Holmes, but very interesting to see early attempts at special effects. :)

    1. Such a short film, too, and yet you get a story from it.

  7. I didn't know there was such an old Sherlock film, either. More or less during his 'lifetime'! Valerie

    1. Yes! Arthur Conan Doyle died in 1930. It must've been satisfying to see this.
