The Guardian says,
is a mysterious animated film, tough and delicate, that has won prizes at international festivals since it first appeared in 1980, culminating in prizes in both Los Angeles and Zagreb (in 2002) as the best animated film of all time. It was made in Soviet Russia by Yuri Norstein, who was not allowed to travel to receive any of his awards, and who was almost prevented from making, and then from showing, the film at all. It is a film that immediately changes the memory - mine at least - of all other films.
There certainly seems to be a lot of symbolism in this short, none of which I can figure out but of course it is still early Monday morning! I'll give it another go. :)
ReplyDeleteLet's just assume the symbolism is speaking to our subconscious ;)
Delete...we all have tales to tell.
ReplyDeleteNow whether or not we should tell them is another matter...
DeleteYou are not going to believe this one, but I have seen this film. For a few years at school we had an Asian Culture club, which I advised, and the kids picked places to "study". When they did Siberia they watched this film. It was a fun club to do.
ReplyDeleteI'd join that club in a heartbeat!
DeleteI started watching this and couldn't get into it. I started over from the beginning, and I guess it has gone over my head, even though I LOVE shorts.
ReplyDeleteI just let it sweep over me. It might help to read the plot description at Wikipedia. That can spoil some films, but it might help with this one.
DeleteA good film! Thanks for sharing, Valerie
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked it :)
DeleteThis looks very interesting!
ReplyDeleteIt intrigued me :)
DeleteFascinating to watch even though I didn't understand it at all and was never sure if that was a dog or a wolf. There were soldiers and it was obvious there was supposed to be meaning in all of it but it was lost on me.
ReplyDeleteIt's helpful with this film to read the plot description at Wikipedia. But I just watched it and let the images flow :) Sometimes movies can be just visual experiences for me without any deep meaning required.
DeleteI'm a person who wants to know thw words to songs and will look them up when I can't understand them--at least these days when you can look them up--LOL! Things that are illogical in movies and books will bug me, too. Even in made up worlds I need some kind of consistency. How boring, eh? LOL!
DeleteI'm that way with books. I want a clear, linear plot and words I can easily look up. I'm not that way with movies, but I've stopped reading books that didn't give me those things.
