Black Velvet

Black Velvet:

sung by Alannah Myles and released on this date in 1989.

lyrics excerpt:
Up in Memphis the music's like a heat wave
White Lightnin' bound to drive you wild
Mama's baby's in the heart of ev'ry school girl
"Love Me Tender" leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he'd leave you longing for

Black velvet and that little boy smile
Black velvet and that slow southern style
A new religion that'll bring you to your knees
Black velvet if you please

  1. Ah yes Alannah Myles one of Canada's female rockers. I believe after her car accident she quit touring ...

    1. I'm googling more about her now. I hadn't realized a car accident had stopped her touring :( What a shame...

    1. She perfectly captures that hot Southern summer vibe, I think.

  3. This a great song and a great version. It is a classic for sure seeing that I can still remember many of these lyrics after all this time. Not that classics are because I can remember the lyrics but because if I don't remember lyrics to many songs. :) I'm one of those 3 words and then do the la-la-la as the rest of the song goes on. Happy Thursday! Hugs-Erika

    1. Sometimes covers are even better than the originals, but I think in this case her original is still the best. I hear you about lyrics. Sometimes I think I know the words until I try to sing along, and then I realize I have definite gaps lol

  4. That was fascinating, since I've never heard of her until now. Great choice for today, too!

    1. She's not nearly as well known here as she ought to be. I stumbled across her looking for songs that mention Memphis.

  7. I can't remember who I heard sing this but seems like I have heard a couple other people's versions, too. Quite a sultry song. ;)
